First and foremost, a standard. Please add a (Spoiler) tag on the end of your thread title if you include spoilers as per the "HEY, YOU!" thread above.
I don't know how to exactly give advice to what you should do with your character. Oblivion is so open ended that no skill is better than another, every one of them has it's uses. However, you don't buy skills. You use them and they go up.
You can however buy items that enhance your skills.
Also, if you want a semi decent challenge to the game, try this-
Start a fresh new game with whatever kind of character you want. Level up your major skills 100 times, spreading the 100 out as you like (Getting you to level 10, if you focus entirely on combat, basically just go outside and fight stuff, especially in ruins and caves), then, go to your options and find where it gives you a difficulty slider, if it's directly in the center, slide it just a small bit (Like a centimeter) to the right, making the game just a wee bit more difficult, and THEN do the main quest.

Actually, if you were to choose Blade, Block, and Alchemy as 3 of your seven major skills, you would level pretty fast.
Blade- Go to as many ayleid dungeons in the game as you can and level that a few times, worth it to your character as blade (or blunt, or whatever weapon you want) is useful to have.
Block- Go to the arena in Imperial City, bring a bunch of health potions that you don't mind disposing of, and stand there while holding the block button (Customizable on computer, dunno on Xbox) and let the opponen attack you. It's recommended you do this while your a pit dog and not when your about to go to grand champion, pit dog opponents are a bit easier and do less damage, and therefore you'll survive easier. But yeah, just stand there and use like two or three potions worth of health before you die to have the opponent hit you while you hold block, levels it pretty quickly.
Alchemy- Go to a single ayleid ruin, doesn't matter what and level your blade skill along the way, but make sure you collect a lot of teasure (Including Welkynd Stones, they are very much worth selling). Sell all the equipment you get from that dungeon aside from if you want to keep anything, and then go to an alchemy shop somewhere, (One I know by heart is "The main Ingredient" in the imperial city, which is along the outer areas of the market district that you can find), and buy a lot of ingredients, all of them if you can, along with at least one mortar and pestal. Now, once you have that, click the mortar and pestel in your inventory and it should give you a small tutorial on how to do alchemy, and basically have at. Make as many potions as you want, sell them all, wait 24 hours, and buy again, probably the easiest way to level your character.

Welcome
Don't worry about being at a certain level or how fast you level up. The game does not get easier when you are higher levels because the enemies go up in level the same as you do. It's not about leveling, its more about completing quests and honing the skills you need to improve your character even if they are not your major skills.
Also, I would not recommend doing the main quest through to the end right off the bat. If you do that and think you have "beaten" the game you will be missing some of the best parts. Go off and explore the countryside, collect ingredients for making potions. When you kill enemies take the most expensive stuff and sell it. Go to one of the cities and talk to the people. They will give you other quests to do that will improve your arsenal. Consider joining the Fighter's Guild. That will give you a place to sleep and increase your experience. You could also join the mages guild where you will eventually get to join the Arcane University and have the chance to make your own spells.
Have you stolen anything or killed an innocent person? If you do, the game gets more interesting and may give you some difficult choices.
You've spent 7 hours a day for two days. That's a lot, but many people have 200-300 hours or more in the game. There is lots to do so I would not consider the time you have spent wasted if you have enjoyed the experience.

ok thanks i guess i will run around and explore more.. i have joined the blade and the theives guild. i got offered to join the assasins guild but have no accepted the offer yet. the only thing that frustrates me is i went into an oblivion gate and had trouble doing it. i figured it was just cause of my class and not being able to use any spells. but now that i know it gets harder as i level. i guess i wil start exploring dungeons to get better gear.
what can i do with my gold. i have a few thousand from selling random stuff to my theif guy
also i didin't mean the14 hours was a lot.. i just didin't wanna see the time i did invest into it wasted...
i have played MMO's and any1 who maxed a char on an mmo knows RPGS take time.
only question i still have is how do i chose major skills.. i thoight they are set in stone. like mine say heavy armor blades you know that stuff..
also is there a way even though i am straight warrior to get spells like bufs and heals. even though my mana pool is like nothing
thanks again for all your help guys.
i know i am a noob i accept it
(ps i have all the alchemy stuff) all 5 things. mortar blah blah all that

Yeah, I find killing the nasties less problematic than just finding my way around. I use the tactical map a LOT. If you really get pounded in there, the towers often have red fountains that restore health and blue fountains that restore magicka (so cast your heal spell until you're out of magicka before you use the blue fountain).the only thing that frustrates me is i went into an oblivion gate and had trouble doing it
Once you create a character, your major skills are set in stone. You can double check what's major and minor on your stats tab (I have a 40th level custom class character and sometimes I still can't remember whether I took Block or Hand-to-Hand as my last major skill, and I can never remember what my major skills are when I play one of the standard classes). It's also worth mentioning that only increases in major skills count toward leveling up, so for instance if you have Heavy Armor as a major skill but you actually wear Light Armor, every hit you take increases your Light Armor skill but they don't count toward leveling up. Although as other posters have mentioned, it doesn't matter that much since most of your enemies level up with you.only question i still have is how do i chose major skills.. i thoight they are set in stone. like mine say heavy armor blades you know that stuff..
Can the answer to this question be "No"?
