Well, i'm not sure if this is what your supposed to do, but anyway.
When you do the quest "Aid for Bruma" when in front of the sigil stone in one of the (i think) 5 gates, you should see somewhere around you is one of those "The punished" things, and inside it should be some riverwalking boots, take them.
Now, if you ever find youself stuck in one of those times where your in oblivion and you can see where your supposed to go, but theres lava in the way, then equip the boots, and run over it, this will still take off damage but it's quicker so you won't die, depending on how far away it is, and then you can wait, which restores your health, and VOILA!
I know that there could be enemies nearby and stuff, but in that case, use a healing potion, or you could save before you run across and check the following
1. If it's too far
2.If there will be enemies nearby
if you die or are low on health by the time you get there with enemies nearby, then load to before you walked over the lava, and do it the hard way.
it's just that this always worked for me but if it doesn't work for you, plz don't call me stupid!
Oh, and the reason i put "kind of spoiler" is because i mentioned "aid for bruma" (as you can tell, im not used to puuting *Spoiler*.)
Just thought i'd post this little tip! *Kind of spoiler*

There are a number of waterwalking items in the game. And you can make your own, too. On lava, they would be best used by a Dark Elf, heavily protected by Resist Fire and Fire Shield Potions/Spells.
But it's a good tip, all the same. I've not thought of using Waterwalk on lava.
