What order do you do quests(spoilers)
After playing bgii so many times you tend to get a routine of what you do first, second, third, ect...
For me I tackle most of the quests in Amn very quickly. I tend to get as many quests active as possiable without wasting time. After I am finished in the city I go to Firkraag first. I don't know exactly why, maybe I love the challenge of killing the dragon when I am still pretty low level. After that I go to trademeet and finish those quests including druid grove. Then I proceed to go after the shadow dragon. Then the stronghold quests. Depends what type of character I am playing but if it is strong I will go to watchers keep before the asylum. After all that I go to the asylum, over grown fish land, underdark, and the rest is relatively linear.
So my question is how do you go about it and why.

My quest progression is somewhat cut to pieces, but that's becouse I'm soloing (and tries to do the ironman simultaneusly). First I do all the quests that gives easy xp without hard fights, most of the run-and-fetch-quests. Like the circus, Renal Bloodscalp (to the point where Edwin wants you to assassinate the Cowled Wizard, then I stop and begin another quest, to get back when I think I can handle the mage and those stone golems), the churces Sir Sarles quest. This time I did the D'Arnise Hold early becouse I wanted the Flail of Ages. And the two dragons, well, you just can't let them live, can you?
Though I usually let the Twisted Rune and Kangaxx wait untill I get back from the Underdark.
But in a big sweap, my chosing of quests is based on how easy the reward.

After Irenicus' dungeon, I do all of the quests in Waukeens Promenade. Then I go and do the Slums. Thn the Bridge District, Graveyard, Gov't, Temple, and then City Gates. All quests with the exeptipn of the main quest, Liches(except the one in city gates, I kill him), Kangaax, Twisted Rune, and the Unseeing Eye. Then I go to Trademeet and do the quests, then Druid Grove, then Windspear hills to kill Firkraag. Then I do D'Arnise Hold and Umar Hills. Then Dark temple or whatever. Then I finish what quests I didn't do before in Athkatla(again, the exeption of Kangaax and the Twisted Rune). Then I hop on the main quest sided with the thieves. Then I just follow the SOA storyline until I get to chapter 6 which is when I do the rune and Kangaax. Then after I do the quests in Saradush, I go to Watchers Keep and finish the first 3 levels. Then I beat the other Bhaalspawn and before the final battle I finish off Watchers Keep. That's basically how it goes for me.

That depends on the characters that I am playing and is driven by the collection of magic items. I often pick up the Tuigan Bow, Lilacor, and stuff from the thugs at the Promenade and sewers. Then I take Celestial Fury and go pick up the Flail of Ages and Belm. Next, depending on my mood I may complete the city quests, NPC quests, and kill the dragons or just go to the underdark. However, before going to the underdark, I pick up the Ring of Gaxx and sometimes the Staff of the Magi (depending on my mood). Sometimes, I visit the red dragon almost straight out of the first dungeon just for the challenge (and without cheese, that's a challenge). After the underdark, I just clean up all the XP left and then kill Irenicus.
I usually do most in the same general order, but I have three groups and may mix them up within the group depending if I needed a specific weapon, or what have you.
First:
circus
slavers
trademeet
druid grove
Middle:
d'arnise keep
windspear
umar hills
first few levels of watcher's keep
unseeing eye
Here's where I usually depart for dear Imoen...
Last:
twisted rune
kangaxx
balance of watcher's keep
any other quests...

I tend to do eveything I can before heading to the underdark, like most people here leaving only the rune and kangaxx! It's generally the circus, slavers and bridge murders quests first, then off to the Umar hills as that has the easiest dragon. In a way I'd like to be more role-playingish and run off to the asylum as soon as I have the money, but I did that the first time and had to cheese through the mindflayer dungeon.

It really depends on a number of factors:
1. Who I intend to keep in my party for the majority of the game
2. How long I can bear to put up with Minsc and Jaheira -usually not long
3. How long I want to dealy meeting back up with Imoen - usually very long
That's only more role-playerish if you are playing a good aligned character, evil characters wouldn't really care about what happens to Imoen and would likely want to increase their own powers before tackling Irenicus.

quest order ***SPOILERS***
I've done BG2 a bunch of times, too.
I like to rotate NPCs, and try to get as many in as possible, so the order in which I do the quests depends on the order I pick up the NPCs.
Also, I do the Athkatla quests while waiting for timed events to occur, in random order.
To a large extent, the order I pick up the NPCs depends on pc gender and romance preferences.
intial party:
female pc, bonded path with Xan but hasn't had the heart to let Anomen down yet, Xan, Anomen, Minsc, Jaheira
Cult of the Eyeless (dropped Minsc, picked up Keldorn)
Keldorn's family problems--let Keldorn go
Renfeld
Baron Ployer's Curse
Montaron/Xzar
Ithilium Quest concurrently with Umar Hills (picked up Mazzy)
Ranger Stronghold (multi-strongholds)
Moiya's debt problem
Anomen's decision (LG route)
Trademeet (druids & genies, Tiris, dueling families
Pala
picked up Auren, let Mazzy go
am about to start d'Arnise Keep
picked up Nalia, dropped Jaheira, will do D'Arnise Keep and keep Nalia along long enough to get through the Roenal abduction
eventually, drop Nalia and Auren
get Valygar (& probably Mazzy) and get Planar Sphere
lose Mazzy and Valygar, pick up Keldorn & Minsc
Windspear hills, Paladin stronghold, Firkraag
a few side quests, probably one w/Jan (losing Yoshimo for a while)
eventual party for Spellhold will be pc, Xan, Anomen, Keldorn, Yoshimo/Imoen, and probably Minsc.
Since Xan doesn't have ToB content, I might give Sarevok a try this time.

Usually, I do all the minor quests first, such as the Copper Coronet, Circus, Graveyard, Bridge Murders etc. I also attend to any NPC quests that are pressing.
These generally provide me with enough cash to initiate working for Aran Linvail, after which point I head after Imoen. I like the challenge of the Underdark and Jonny I before becoming too powerful.
Once I return, I complete whatever personal stronghold quest is on the menu, followed by the other large quests, in no particular order.

My general order is to start with the Circus, then the Slavers in the Copper Coronet, then the Bridge (even if the quest is uncompleted you can collect XP for solving the mystery ), then I'll go about doing minor quests in the city followed by the De'Arnise Keep...where I will always run out of inventory space....
The time I played was with a Priest of Lathander.
Chapter 1:
- Irenicus' Laboratory (picked up Imoen, Minsc, Jaheira, & Yoshimo).
- Waukeen's Promenade, Circus quest (lost Imoen, picked up Aerie).
I skipped Peeblecrusher, after he smoked me... too tough for wee little me.
Chapter 2:
- The Unseeing Eye quest (picked up Keldorn).
- All quests, as stumbled upon, that could be completed inside Athkatla.
- All quests, as stumbled upon, that required leaving the city walls for the treacherous wilderness areas outside of Athkatla.
In the beginning of Chapter 2, I let that little kid take me to the Temple District, to initiate the Lathander stronghold quests. Figure I'd get a storage facility ready to hold my unique but unused magic items. Plus I wanted the spaced-out stonghold quests to play out before advancing the main storyline.
This made the Unseeing Eye quest my first for Chapter 2. Worked out good, because I wanted Keldorn long-term, but worked out bad, because I think these are very tough areas for a beginning BG2 party.
Only things not done, before initiating Chapter 3:
- Waukeen's Promenade: Peeblecrusher
- Bridge District: Twisted Rune
- Temple District: Guarded Compound, and party of muggers in sewers
- City Gates: the Lich in the Crooked Crane Inn
- Kangaxx
- Limited Wish quest: Captain Dennis, etc.
- Destroying the Shadow Dragon (but did the rest of that quest)
- Destroying the Red Dragon (but did the rest of that quest)
After returning from the Underdark, I completed all of the above unfinished quests in glorious fashion. I LOVED punking that Peeblecrusher dope (& Pooky too). And by only having loose-ended quests to tie up, the last couple Chapters had a nice story momentum leading towards the finale.
If I were to play again, it'd be as an evil Fighter/Mage. My stronghold, as well as picking up Korgan Viconia & Edwin, would dictate which quests I would do first, as well as doing "inner-city only" quests first.

Why is it that whenever I finally get around to playing a new game for the first time,
I feel like playing Baldur's Gate for the second time...

Like many others I too hit the Circus right away. Then head over to the slums and pick up Nalia (if I don't play a mage) and do the Copper Coronet, the Slum Sewers (in order to get Lilacor for Minsc), and then the Slavers. I then like to take it to Pebblecrusher. From there is when I start to head in varying directions. But those usually give me some good items to start with and enough cash to pick up a couple of additional handy things.

With tactics:
Circus
Mae'var (hard, very hard, depends on the class)
then I go to the graveyard to fend off the undeads in the cripts, so that I can a) remember the powers they gain with improved undead b) gather neat stuff to use on the other quests.
Then, I start Trademeet. When I finish it, I go to Nalia's keep.
Then sometimes I go to the bridge solve the tanner's quest
then I choose either to go to the underdark or to stay a bit longer to level up.
Without tactics:
I go straigth to the underdark, and I try to fend off all the enemies. I mass destroy the Kua-toas, then I kill the beholders, then the ilithids, then the drow, then if I'm with a evildoer party I also kill the dragon and go straight to kill Bodhi once I get off Underdark.
Then I fend off the other quests, for the items I need, sometimes I do watcher's keep and then Irenicus is in the table for supper.
Then ToB, which is linear, but I prefer killing Abazigal first.
That's how I do

Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocre minds. The latter cannot understand it when a person does not thoughtlessly submit to hereditary prejudices but honestly and courageously uses their intelligence.
