Dumb newbie Question here . . . (possible spoiler)

HOW DO YOU KILL A STINKING WILL O'THE WISP????

My elf is up to level 9 and can take down trolls, imps, goblins, and marauders most of the time pretty easily. I just hit an Ayelid (sp?) ruin just west of the city walls of Bravil and made it down to the innermost chamber and encountered this little glowing ball of light that has toasted me every time I've tried to take it. I've used silver arrows, a Lesser Shock Staff, and the Claymore of Jolts, and this thing takes me down like I was a newborn Nix-Hound pup. It's a little humiliating!

PS If I can't take him down, can I just sneak past him and plunder the chamber?

Might be a glitch, a couple blasts from that shock bolt staff should've done it.

You've got the latest patch right?
Listen up maggots, Mr. Popo's 'bout to teach you the pecking order.
It goes you, the dirt, the worms inside of the dirt, Popo's stool, Kami, then Popo.

Hmmmmm . . . . .

No, I haven't downloaded any patches at all. Is the game gonna lock up if I don't? One thing I have noticed about the Will o'the Wisp is that he disappears when I hit him the first time, then reappears just before he hits me with whatever it is he is zapping me with. I know he drains attributes as well as health, and FAST! I'm gonna have another run at him this morning, I think. Thanks!

They're little buggers.....SO hard to kill. I struggled with them till I got my Mage's Staff.....80 points of Frost damage 3 or 4 times would do it, but unyil then it toasted me every time

I remember having trouble with these guys early in the game but now I own them. If you have sneak, hit it with a sword while in sneak mode for a x6 bonus, then do not stay in sneak mode. You can wield your weapon more effectively if you are upright.
Same with arrows. First one in sneak for x3 damage then go upright to move faster.
Dip your arrows or blade in poison if you have some. Go to your inventory for a potion to boost your health if you get low. Using magic will take a turn you could use to swing the sword instead.

I got by him finally . . .

Snuck right past him, nabbed the loot from the chest, grabbed a Weykind stone, and ran like heck!!!! He still nearly toasted me before I got out of there, and actually followed me out of the ruin, but my horse was faster than he was . . .

of course, there were two trolls around the next bend in the road!:speech:

You don't need the patch. I don't have it, and haven't felt any need for it yet.

Will-o-Wisps ARE difficult. Imo, they are the most challenging critters in the game. That vanishing act of theirs is part of their nature, not a glitch.
They are also immune to lots of stuff: normal weapons, disease, poison, paralysis. They have NO weaknesses! They are also able to absorb your health and magica, and to damage your Willpower and Intelligence. Nasty blighters.

You need to be fast, to have decent armour, to have a good ranged magic spell, or magic weapon, with a lot of charges left in it. Because the only way to beat 'em is to just keep on and on whacking away with the best you've got, whilst guzzling lots of Restore Health/Restore Magica potions.

I just treat them like blinking vampires. Silver arrows from sneak. Yeah, they're nasty, so the trick is to not let them find you ;)

Only really effective if you are a Marksman with good Sneak ability! :p ;)

Actually, I never found silver arrows any better than any other weapon with W-o-wisps.

you can sneak past it with a good enough sneak skill, probably around 60 to 70 though.

Detect Life

You can nail them when they blink by using Detect Life. Big pink blur, just ripe for beaming with your favorite spell or poisoned arrow.
