Low framerate on Dantooine Help please

Post by Jedi_Sauraus »

Te frame rate is extremely fluid no lagging at all on taris and the jedi enclave, however as soon as I got to matale residence, the frame rate went to hell 10-17 recorded by fraps extreme lagging and running into walls at 1 fps.

system: Athlon 64 3200+

1GB DDR unfortunatly @333mhz (2x Generic 256mb @333mhz + 1x 512@ 400 kingston)

Gigabyte Geforce 6600 256mb 400/800 core/memory overclocked to 500/850

I know there must be a way to resolve this issue I've played KotoR many times with the same settings (10x7 resolution everything maxed out 2x aniso and AA) and whats most intresting here the game ran perfectly on my old setup (Athlon XP @ 2600+ 512 DDR @333mhz geforce 4 ti overclocked)

on my new system I run far cry and doom 3 at high settings 10x7 + 2x AAwith 40< fps in the heaviest firefights there has to be a way to fix this prbolem :( I have latest drivers and directX

Edit: the problem is reduced but does not go away with a 8x6 resolution all settings @ lowest I also have the latest patch

I know. I had this problem on my system too (Intel Pentium 4 520 2.8Ghz, 512MB RAM, 128MB ASUS Geforce 6200 [PCI-E]). You can thank the Odyssey engine for this. The only way I've found is to switch back and forth between the menu and the game screen. It helps with both the lagg and warping problem in Dantooine.

Update:

After extensive searching I've found the solution under the graphic options in the KotoR .ini file type in "Disable Vertex Buffer Objects=1" works like a charm 50 frames on all of dantooine without any loss in visual quality. I find it wierd that I had no issues whatsoever on my old system which was alot slower.

That "solution" didn't actually fix the problem for me.

BTW, the problem is the NVidia graphics card, which is ludicrous, as they're the industry standard IMNSHO.

Some things to try:

Occasionally, holding down the "B" button and forcing the character to walk helps.

Sometimes switching from the game to a menu and back helps.

Sometimes I just give up and reboot the whole system, and that helps.

I also dropped all the video options down to the lowest level.

I have the problem regularly in the Taris Upper City, Kashyyk Lower Shadowlands, and occasionally in the Ebon Hawk.

I use Nvidia too, don't have any problems on any level EXCEPT Dantooine, which is really irritating. I'd love to explore the whole place but the game gets so screwy that I only take care of the main objectives...and even doing them is tough since it gets so choppy and my character just freezes.

Have you tried turning off the grass and other 'fancy' extras?

Yup, and that helped some, but not entirely. Admittedly, my system is handicapped - I have no AGP slot, so I'm using a PCI video card, but my research into the problem has pointed multiple times to the NVidia card itself. The first time I played the game, I simply gave up on 2 or 3 sidequests and played the game out. I can get past the bad spots now, and it only interferes with my enjoyment marginally.

Tried that once. Didn't really helped in alleviating the lag and warp problem. Had to try the solution of switching back and forth from the menu to the game screen constantly. Troublesome but at least it did work for me. :)

I've noticed that it's almost always when someone is using a GeForce6xxx card. I have the same problem.

I have had some luck with changing the sound settings: forcing software and deselecting the Enable EAX option.

You may find it helps if your character faces certain directions. Try turning on the spot, find which direction your turning with the best framerate, then make sure you stay facing that way as you move (use the Z and C keys to move left and right). Note that the best direction to face differs in different parts of the map.

If your character becomes 'stuck in place' after a low framerate, teleporting to the Ebon Hawk and back will often fix it.
