Having a run through...(possible spoilers)

Post by dj_venom »

Well, I'll avoid saying the whole story of how I didn't play this game when I first borrowed it off a friend, but recently gave it another go, found it fantastic, then was annoyed when my video card had issues and corrupted my save file, but it looks as though I just said it all then.

ANYWAY, I played a 2-handed sword user Redguard through the first time on vanilla Morrowind. I was doing the trials when I did lose my save, so rather than go further back, I feel like starting again. In my opinion, it was quite easy with my character, but perhaps I levelled it a bit too much, giving myself too great an advantage.

So now I plan to start a new character, and I also plan to try out mods, since the game is renowned for them. Due to my unfamiliarity, I place my hands in you GBers, to inform me of the mods I should use and the character I should choose.

So far, I'm thinking something along the lines of a Bosmer marksman (I make custom classes however, I just prefer the whole tweaking), as it sounds like a good challenge, but I am open to any ideas if someone can suggest a good challenge. Additionally, could people post in suggested mods (with their links) for me to try out (to the mods, I realise there is a mod listing at the top of the page, but several don't have links and this will be a lot easier).

For additional info, I have Morrowind only, no expansions, I want a good challenge for a char, and I won't be downloading huge mods, as I can't use up a heap of downloads. The mods themselves, throw them all at me (provided they are balanced and are worthwhile/fun), and the character builds, whatever you decide. And please, can someone point me to a mod that does something with all those cliffracers, I am so sick of them.

Hope all this is understandable, and I'll appreciate the replies, so thanks in advance.

P.S. I never realised how good the game was, I'll have to see about getting Oblivion now.

If you intend playing a Marksman you might consider mods like Suran Archery Tradehouse

Or you might want to consider going down the ranger route, in which case you might like some of the mods found here

Read the GameBanshee review before you do. ;)

Concerning being a marksman, that's not usually a route I take, but I have used some of those mods successfully in the past. Consider downloading the following pair:

Cory's Ultimate Ranger mod: Harvest raw materials to make bows, arrows, poison for arrow tips, etc.

Adventurer's Tent: A carryable kit with guarskin walls, campfire, bedroll, table and pot.

Some of those mods look great! Especially this little jem:
Hunt Cliff Racers to Extinction 2.0 by Jaxalot.
The ultimate goal of all Rangers on Vvardenfell.
Regarding normal mods, non-Ranger related, any good suggestions that really help?

Also, I've seen you mention that mod checking program a few times Fable, so I'll be sure to run that when I set all this up.

You should probably check out the mods mentioned here

And check out the sticky mod thread, here. It doesn't always have links, but nearly everything can be found up on TESSource, Elric's, PlanetElderScrolls, or through Mythic Mods. Especially look at Mythic Mods' link to Telesphoros' List.

Yeah, it's those sites that I needed. Now that I know those are the more prominent, tomorrow I'll take a look through, find what interests me, then post them here and see what people think about them.

Thanks for the help again.

DW recently started over as a Ranger and got quite a bit of feedback on mods for her desired play. You might find her thread useful.

Also, Mr_Sir had a thread about mods for a Druid class that might be helpful as well. His thread is here.

Silly me, I searched for mods, but didn't think to search for Ranger.

In that case, if I recall correctly, DW said in another thread she would be gone for a couple of days. When she gets back I'll have to ask her about it to see how it is progressing and ask for recomendations.

Thanks for finding that.

Oh, and now that I remember, I hate the journal system.

From what I've read, most others do, apparently it gets better in the expansions (or at least from what I've read it seems that way), and due to many of the mods needing Tribunal, I'm going to try and see if anyone I know has it, I have a feeling someone will.

So is there any way to improve the journal system, or is it something you just have to get used to?

The add-ons do improve it somewhat, but it was poorly designed to begin with. And they didn't upgrade the journal entries from MW when they added the expansions, so the buggy entries (such as quests that don't vanish from your to-do list when you finish them) remain.

A couple of journal mods let you manually link journal entries, and attempt to remove stubborn ones, but it doesn't always work. On the other hand, Journal Enhanced, which lets you add journal entries, always works, but you can only place text entries, not create quests or hotlinks.

Ahh damn, my eyes must have been tricking me.

I saw that and Writing Enhanced. I'll just use the latter and have a number of pages, with each applying to specific factions and listing it there.

Good idea. I have books for some of the very elaborate quest mods that include a lot of linked quests. Writing Enhanced lets me track these when the Journal frequently doesn't.

Okay, well I've been hunting mods for awhile, and some of these require Tribunal (hopefully none require Bloodmoon), so I won't be staring until I can get Tribunal. Anyway, here they are:
 • aBot Water life
 • A call to Issilar
 • Advanced Herbalism
 • Adventurer's Tent
 • Arrow Fix Chu (I couldn't resist getting his mods :p )
 • Ashlander Traders
 • Back Pack v09
 • Better Bodies
 • Blight Bounties
 • Complete Morrowind
 • Gladiator
 • Guar Rescue
 • Lights 300
 • Morrowind Crafting
 • Morrowind Enhanced
 • Muck Shovel of Vivec
 • Necessitites of Morrowind (this looks good)
 • Inseperable Siblings
 • Morrowind Ecology
 • Of love and ignorance
 • Pegasus Horse Ranch
 • Robin Hood outfit (just want to see, probably won't use if it's unbalanced)
 • Suran Archery Tradehouse
 • Tales of the Bitter Coast
 • Tarmar
 • Telperion
 • The Ranger Mod
 • Toys (another Chu one)
 • Trap Making
 • Travelling Merchants
 • Vertical Limit
 • Vivec Marksman Shop
 • Writing Enhanced
If it looks like I've taken some of these off DW's, then you'd be right, since I basically went through the list from Raven Song, then the list in DW's, then the two mod threads, then just did some browsing of Planet Morrowind and Telesphoros.

So I'll find out how compatible these are when I give them a go with WyreMesh after I install Tribunal.

And on a side note, it's great to see how small these mods are. Based on the size of BG mods, I was thinking these were going to be huge, instead they're absolutely tiny, and the huge mods are still small. :)

Oh, another thing I just remembered.

In BG, install order was expansion -> patches -> baldurdash -> weidu -> non-weidu.

Is there a similar thing in practice for Morrwind?

[Sorry about the double post again, but this way it gets it back up rather than editing]

I don't think there is a hard and fast rule as such as regard loading orders, but I know that with NoM you need to be more careful than most.

Well, I managed to procure a copy of Tribunal, alas no Bloodmoon, so I decided to give it a go. Unfortunately, some of them turned out to be Bloodmoon requiring (most notably Morrowind Ecology), so that couldn't be used. I had some problems with a couple of others, so I had to cut them too, then for some reason Herbalism didn't recognise Tribunal, so I'm currently running the Morrowind only version. Gladiator has some problem regarding truncating, not sure what is going on there, but it seems to work nonetheless.

Tribunal must be loaded before Bloodmoon. The reverse will cause severe problems to eventually show up, even if you get it to work.

As for the mods themselves, order matters in some cases. Some mods have dependencies on others, which means the dependent mod has to load after the one it depends upon. Again, if the order is reversed, all sorts of errors will crop up.

Some mods have a variety of conflicts. When these conflicts are severe, as in the case of mods that share some of the same "physical" space, the game may crash, or items may appear in midair, or doors may not lead where they should. In less serious cases, if two mods set different values on the same item (say, a piece of armor), then the last loaded will determine what that value is.

Some mods are more or less "allergic" to others. Mods that use MWE (Morrowind Enhanced) and those that use MWSE (Morrowind Script Extender) can work together, but MWE mods like Writing Enhanced (which lets you make books in the game) have to load after all MWSE-based mods. Otherwise, it simply won't work.

I recommend downloading and installing a wonderful utility called Wrye Mash. It does many things, including keeping track of dependencies. (It also can repair saved games, and knows enough to automatically remove dependent mods if you choose to remove a mod they depend upon, first.)
