The Benefits of Boo

Post by Pellinore »

Just out of curiosity...
Boo takes up a quick item slot. Is there some kind of in game benefit for having that hinderance? Maybe something the designers put in but did not tell anyone about?

No, not in the game as it stands. Boo is simply amusing, adding yet more flavor of Minsc's addled personality.

I seem to recall reading somewhere that a mod was created that actually made Boo usable. Perhaps my memory is wrong but I will have to search the web now to see for sure.
Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocre minds. The latter cannot understand it when a person does not thoughtlessly submit to hereditary prejudices but honestly and courageously uses their intelligence.

That's debatable ;)

There is but I cannot for the life of me remember its name.

And in response to the initial post - if you want to make Boo appear useful trying playing the Unfinished Business mod, the component by Cliffette entitled "THe Kidnapping of Boo" ;)

Priceless quest! Try it, love it :D

... a bit more on topic : Boo isn't really "useful", he's just part of Minsc's personnality, exactly as Edwin being a Thayvian Wizard or Jaiherai being a Harper.

Wasn't that made by UserUnfriendly? I don't recall exactly.

I found it!

The reason everybody barely remembers it and cannot find it is because it was an April Fool's item at G3. Here is the page for any that are interested.

OMG! ROFLMAO!
Here, in this recitation of Bri's, Boo discusses some of the problems of a hamster turned human....

Boo: “How do you humanss ever learned to walk thiss way? It iss like trying to walk on four legss…with two of them broken.”

Nalia: “Heh, it is something we are taught at a very young age, Boo. Maybe if you didn’t slope forward so much, you would have an easier time of it. For all that, you seem to be adapting quite well.”

Boo: “I have very little choicsse madam Nalia. Everything feelss sso wrong. Esspesshially when I ssee you move and then look at what I have become.”

Nalia: “Oh, don’t think such thoughts. You shouldn’t compare yourself to me anyways.”

Boo: “I can’t help it. I mean, I’ve sseen you palm thingss that a hamsster would be hard pressssed to ssteal. All thosse sshiny, pretty thingss…”

Nalia: “You’ve seen that? I thought was careful...”

Boo: “You were, ma’am, you were! But you forget, such thingss are ssecond nature for hamssters…and maybe the more ssmarter rat. Ah, if only you had been a hamster. Such puppiess we would have had!”

Nalia, gulps: “Puppies?”

Boo: “Hamsster young…are called pupss. Yess, I could almosst smell it now…your cheekss sstuffed to the brim with peass, ssquealing with delight…”

Nalia: “Boo, stop this line of talk, now…”

Minsc interjects: “The noble hamster can always squeeze into the tightest of spaces!”
there is a rumour

Apart from being cute, furry and keeping Minsc warm at night, Boo doesnt appear to have any real purpose. However I heard a rumour that Boo is in fact the witch that he believes he failed to protect prior to his severe knock on the head. Rumour is that in BG3 Minsc will discover a way to return Boo to her natural form, regain his sanity and return to his people a hero/ leader. But thats only a rumour.

Indeed! I can just imagine Minsc in his usual earnest and guileless way bellowing exactly that at the tail end of said conversation. And as the party shortly thereafter engages in battle.. "Go for the ........'eyes' Boo... Go for the .....'eyes' :o :D

Er... *cough* :p

@Aldazir,
I'm pretty sure Boo was with Minsc in BG1 when Dynahair was still quite vital. Though, you may of course be jesting :D ;)

Boo makes Minsc look dumber than he is :p And shows he has a heart (I always felt he was far much more "evil" in BG1, and in BG2 he shows his do gooder side specially in his interjections involving Boo).

I felt very disappointed when I noticed there was no boo quest during BG2. Only small banter with Jan Jansen. It seems there's a banter with Solaufein in Sola mod, but I'm not sure about that (I usually kick minsc here to upgrade my fighting-spellcasting crew).
Flesh to stone ain't permanent, it seems.

ok...ok..you got me

but I did say it was just a rumour ;) however I would have liked to have seen some sort of quest involving Minsc and his furry little friend ( apart from Jan trying to steal him all the time )

The Kidnapping of Boo, by Clifette, part of UB.

And though Luis Antonio has since been banned I recommend anyone thinking Minsc is useless to equip him with Crom Faeryr one hand, some other weapon he is good at in the other and let him loose...

I would never-ever as non-evil kick Minsc from my party, he is amusing (probably my favorite BGII character) and a killing machine.

AND he has Boo...

/me wants a puppy or ferret in his quickslot...

Buttkicking for Godness!!!

Heh, I just loved the first time I had to ALT+F4 my way out as the game crashed - "You sure? Boo will miss you.", not word by word, but something like that. Cracked me up it did. :)

I love Minsc and Boo, but I've never been able to understand how Boo avoids taking any damage from Fireballs and other area-of-affect spells. I mean - he's in Minsc's quick item slot, so it's not like he even has the protection of Minsc's backpack.

I guess he must have both incredibly high saving throws as well as 100% magic resistance.

You get a lot of bonuses when you're a miniature giant space hamster.

Icewind Dale has one like that, too. I won't spoil it for you... you have to play it and find out :D
