Best Two Character Party
A friend and myself want to start a multiplayer game and only control one character each. I was wondering what anyone would recommend us doing. I've beat the game a few times on my own, but my friend is only fairly experienced. We want two class options that will give us a challenge and not make the game too cheezy.
I know some of you have been playin a lot longer than me, so your input would greatly help. We don't care about multiclass or dual class or a straight up single class with a kit...just as long as the combos aren't too cheezy lol.

Two Wild Mages... I'd like to be in on that action.
Problem with the game is, unless there's a thief to unlock or a mage to dispel the game can get pretty long winded.
Still a Bard and a Priest would be a working team to an extent. One poor body would have to walk into traps while the other healed them.

Cleric/Ranger and Kensai/Thief. The game is harder, but beatable without mages. You could replace the C/R with a C/M if you want, but I personally think that having 2 brawler types will help a lot. You could use the oh-so-boring class F/M/C or F/M/C but they are oh-so-boring to play.

yeah
my friend and i were leanin towards the C/M and F/T combo, seeing as it is 4 of your stadard classes in 2 ppl. but would it be better to multiclass or dual class? multi would give me the 2 classes at the same time and since there are only 2 ppl that would be great. but the dual class gets to use those oh-so-awesome kits, though we would have to wait a little longer to use both class abilities.
Well, i appriciate all the help from you guys...I'm glad to see there's a baldur's gate forum still alive and kicking long after the game was released. Of course...it's prolly the best RPG ever created lol.
Oh yeah...i know about the F/M/T and F/M/C combos...too much cheese for me lol. I assured my friend we wouldn't take the easy way out...just the most logical without bein cheap

If you do C/M, I reccomend you Multi-Class it. If you do C/R, you could Multi Class it, though I like Dualling it better. For F/T, I reccomend Kensai dualled to thief. Of course, you could go with anything, it's just my opinion. I have never played Multiplayer yet, and I don't know what it's like, but I assume that you both have to know when to use spells and attack, and use cheese etc. Maybe get some Walkie-Talkies or phones with speaker so you can tell eachother what the plan is.

lol...i think we can pause the game and type to each other. we don't have headsets or walkie talkies. I appriciate your input berethor...we'll go fighter kensai dualed to theif at lvl whatever and multiclass the mage/cleric (who i'll be controling). I've always wanted to try a monk too...but i'll prolly solo with it after i finish soloin with my paladin...
thanks again
thanks again
I actually did a (solo, not multiplayer) game using a Swasbuckler/Mage and a Fighter/Cleric, both dual-classed (no ToB).
The Swashbuckler/Mage (dual at 10) can handle traps, locks and detect illusion. Ignore Set Traps (you won't gain any greats ones) and Hide/Move, because you have all those cool invisibility spells =). The swashbuckler kit gives you some much needed ac and thac0, and removes the backstabb, wich is quite obsolete because of the (very) crappy thac0 Mage/Thieves get.
The Fighter/Cleric can wear heavy armours, a shield (or dual-wield) and use all those cool self-buffing priest spells (Holy Power, Draw Unpon Holy Might, etc.). Get him a Flail of the Ages early =)

may be a little bit off topic
if you like an epic approach...
I would consider playing BGT (with some other mods, especially XP nerf)
with a DruidicSorcerer and a Swashbuckler/Cleric (multiclass... yes it's illegal, but the HLA's are worth it -> Whirlwind (as there is a lack in the tanking department))
Both are Bhaalspawn... they work together to survive (and constantly argue who is the "true" successor to Bhaal...)
The DruidicSorcerer boost his Sorcerer/Dragon blood is the perfect match to the Divine, whereas the Swashbuckler/Cleric claims the "perfect" Divine with the thief aspect can't be improved by anything but itself.

haha...i'm sorry...no cheating permitted...
after finally figuring out how to connect my friend and i went with the fighter/thief and the cleric/mage (i control cuz i have more experiance). It was hard at first...my friend dealin with dual roles and myself dealing with a treasure trove of spells...but we're startin to get some really great results from these classes...appriciate all the input guys.

Glad you made a choice. Personally I would've gone with Cleric/Fighter and Thief/Mage, that way both classes would be able to handle fighting and both would have the opportunity to summon and protect themselves

yeah, deadalready, that combo did cross our minds, but we desided that since i knew more about the different assortments of spells and spellcasting, that i should take on the full role as spellcaster.
you see, my friend has only beat the game on easy mode (with cheats lol)...so it was better that i took on the healer/offensive caster.
and kaiser...we did go with a multiclass combo .

Well the thing about a cleric is it's a class that's easy to play and has inconsequential spell selections, really you don't actually select much of them.
It's very hard if not impossible to have bad spell selection as a cleric since all the spell are useful. Very few cleric spells can inflict negative area effects during battles and with clerics it's possible to have many, many spells memorised at once.
There isn't the need to worry about scrolls, intelligence levels or a balance of spell cracking and offensive spells either.
It might be daunting, but it's one of the easiest ways to enter the spell casting field.
Just some food for thought for your next round through the game.
