That should be fine.

For the external drive, it should be as simple as plugging in the USB and waiting a few seconds for Windows to recognize it. If it came with an install CD it might take a few extra steps but should still be fairly straightforward.

I'll keep an eye out to the East for a plume of smoke and send Rav after you if it looks like it's going haywire. :D
Fiona,

If it is Firefox that needs to update, you can backup all of your data to make sure you don't lose it.

Go to this directory:
C:\Documents and Settings\<YourNameHere>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\

Copy the profile directory to someplace else (your desktop is as good a place as any). Then run the update. Once the update is complete, close all Firefox windows, then open Firefox again. If your settings or bookmarks got messed up, copy the profile directory that you backed up back to the original location and it will put everything back.

____________________________________________
Also, if you would like to turn off the Automatic Update, do this:

Tools menu >> Options >> Advanced tab >> Update tab:
Uncheck all three checkboxes.

This way if you want Firefox to update, you can do it manually.
Um.....where will I find that? :o The bit beginning with C I mean
And Rav already told me to turn off the automatic updates and I did. It just ignored me

I wonder why you couldn't choose that name. It's not already taken.

Unless DR is oppressing you and forcing you to wear a name you don't want. *would quote PCU here but would get flogged by the naughty filter*

Fiona,

Open up 'My Computer' (or you can open Windows Explorer and open 'My Computer' from there).

You should see all of your drives there (A = floppy, C = harddrive, D = CD/DVD drive).

Double-click on the C:\ drive, then open each directory in the chain as you get to it:
- Documents and Settings
- <YourNameHere> - this will be whatever your profile is named on your computer
- Application Data
- Mozilla
- Firefox
- Profiles

Inside the Profiles directory you should see a very weirdly named directory, this contains all the details of your Firefox profile. Right click on this folder, slect 'Copy' from the menu. Then right-click on your desktop and select 'Paste' from the menu. This will copy your profile to your desktop, and you can use it to revert back if the update messes up.
