I've got a friend who's a mac user too, me and my pals always tease him about it
Fiona,
Open up 'My Computer' (or you can open Windows Explorer and open 'My Computer' from there).
You should see all of your drives there (A = floppy, C = harddrive, D = CD/DVD drive).
Double-click on the C:\ drive, then open each directory in the chain as you get to it:
- Documents and Settings
- <YourNameHere> - this will be whatever your profile is named on your computer
- Application Data
- Mozilla
- Firefox
- Profiles
Inside the Profiles directory you should see a very weirdly named directory, this contains all the details of your Firefox profile. Right click on this folder, slect 'Copy' from the menu. Then right-click on your desktop and select 'Paste' from the menu. This will copy your profile to your desktop, and you can use it to revert back if the update messes up.
I'm just giving you a hard time JI.
I grew up using macs, and only started using PCs once I got to college. But I learned all the ins and outs very quickly...
My roommate has a PC (386, 2MB RAM, 20MB hard drive, it was smokin'!) and there was this cheezy little game that I loved. So he started trying to lock me out of it and each time I had to figure out how to fix whatever he did, and then learn something new to lock him out too... the two things that took the longest to figure out were making the icon the same color as the background and deleting the shortcut name (so I couldn't see the link) and when he locked the keyboard.
But after that year I knew more about PCs than most people. And my roommate could only use his computer when I let him.

Hmmm.... OK, let's try doing this another way then...
Go to your Bookmarks menu and select 'Manage Bookmarks'.
In your Bookmark Manager, go to File menu >> Export
Save the bookmarks.html file to your desktop.
That will back up all of your bookmarks but not the whole profile. So it's not as complete as the other way but at least it keeps your bookmarks safe. If you would rather continue working to get the other way to work let me know and we can spend more time on it (just don't want to get you too frustrated).
