What's the maximum character level or level cap (standard IWD2, pre-mods)?

So, I've played through IWD2 a few times with a variety of parties, classes, and characters, but what is the maximum level a character can achieve? I would have guessed 20, but I just solo'd the game for the first time with a :mischief: deliciously evil fighter/thief and I wound up with a 28th level human death-scythe. Anybody know the level cap off-hand? 25? 30? 40? Thanks.

The cap is level 30. But this requires level squatting or playing HoF mode.
There is a level40 mod available.
