My characters are frequently being "held" when in combat.
What`s the best defence against this?

There are some items you can equip to protect your party members (or at least some of them) from being held. For instance Arbanes Sword +2 (short sword) which you get fairly early in the game (random encounter when travelling between the different parts of Athkatla). I believe the Ring of Free Action protects against hold person as well - although I'm not sure of this.
This is an easy way of doing it - but I'm sure other board members have more sophisticated strategies. Somehow they always have

Priests have access to the spell free action which provides immunity to hold or movement limiting actions for a temporary amount of time.
The wizard or mage has access to Spell Immunity: Enchantment, this lets a person be immune to lots of hold spells and most Charm or Domination spells too.
Additionally you can boost saves against hold with use of the spells Bless and Mantra, although its not the greatest or most sure fire way of protecting oneself.
