Jauffre and Baurus (spoiler)
I just finished the main quest line for the second time and both times i was unable to keep Jauffre and Baurus alive at the Great Gate outside of Bruma. I was just wondering if anyone has been able to finish the quest before they both die? Im curious to see how things would be at Cloud Ruler Temple if they were still alive. I suppose it makes sense that without an emperor there is really no need for The Blades, but im just curious to know what it would be like if they still lived.

all kinds of spoilers
In all of my previous games Jauffre and Baurus were dead when I came back from the great gate. In fact, I'm not even 100% sure they were both still alive when I when in. But, in all those games I had done a lot of side quests, guild missions, and so forth. So, I was pretty high level when I finished the main quest, and the things coming out of the gates at Bruma were nasty (xivilai, spider daedra, & other bad things).
Anyway, I'm playing a new character and purposely staying as low level as I can through the whole game. I was only level 2 when I went into the great gate. All that came out of the three small gates were scamps & churls, which my allies seemed to be handling pretty well. When I came back from the great gate, casualties were quite low: 1 soldier each from Anvil, Chorrol and Skingrad, and 2 from Bruma. Jauffre, Baurus, Viera Lerus and even that greedy weasel Ulrich Leland were all still alive!
So I was still psyched about that when I finished the main quest. Then after the movie ended, Jauffre attacked Chancellor Ocato! I was totally confused. Did Jauffre think Ocato had designs on the throne and had something to do with Martin's death? Is it supposed to end that way? What the heck was he thinking? Well, Ocato promptly made toast out of Jauffre, and I was devastated. Unfortunately, Ocato was still marked as an "essential character", so I couldn't even kill him! (And oh yes, I tried, even though up to that point my goody-two-shoes character had murders=0 and highest bounty=0).
Long story short (too late, I know
) I loaded my last save game (in Camoran's Paradise, if that gives you some idea how intent I was on saving Jauffre), played it through again, and this time after the movie ended, everybody was friends. I guess the first time Ocato was pretty wild with the destruction magic as we moved from the palace to the temple, and Jauffre was on the receiving end of one too many friendly fire incidents, and after Martin died he decided to go for a little payback. Anyway, I later found Jauffre back at Cloud Ruler, but I haven't found Baurus yet.

Can the answer to this question be "No"?
Ooo Belthan, that is interensting to know! I like Jauffre actually, so we'll give it a go.
By the way does anybody think considering who died at the end and that Ocato stays an essential character that what we are seeing is an expansion pack in the making? I actually think that MQ finished quite lamely, and even that is an understatement, but now I am intrigued.

And He whispered to me in the darkness as we lay together, Tell Me where to touch you so that I can drive you insane; tell Me where to touch you to give you ultimate pleasure, tell Me where to touch you so that we will truly own each other. And I kissed Him softly and whispered back, Touch my mind.

If you really are desperate to keep them alive, you could always use the console. Activate it by pressing the tilde key and select the character of choice by clicking your mouse on him. Then type setessential 1 to mark the npc you have selected as an essential character, and thus renders them invulnerable. If they take enough damage, they will just get knocked out, like any other essential character.
