The "Out-Laws"
We often see a stereotype promoting the idea that one automatically doesn't get along with the spouse's parents.
Since I have a trip coming up which involves attending my SO's family reunion, I'm a bit curious as to how people generally get along with the "Outlaws."
For myself, I actually seem to get along okay with them. My SO's mother is a bit...special to put it mildy, but we don't, in general, hate one another. The SO's paternal side of the family is, in fact, pretty cool.
Though, it is expensive to travel from one end of Canada to the other, so as a result I have actually seen pretty much nothing of them. In fact... the last time I met with his family at large we hadn't even technically begun seeing one another...and that was... erm... nearly 20 years ago.. :speech:
Yes, I'm ever so slightly nervous

lol!
Reminds me of a good line I once heard, "Inlaws as houseguests are sort of like fish, after a few days both begin to smell."

Well, in my personal situation, I get along great with everyone in my wife's family except her mother and maternal grandmother. Her father, aunt #1, aunt #2 and uncle, cousins are all great. But my wife likes her mother and grandmother even less than I do (due to abusive natures, why would you tell an anorexic 16-year-old that is 6' and 130lbs she's getting fat?) so I don't know if that's really the same situation.
And it's basically the same thing on my side, my wife gets along with my family great except my step-father who I also don't like again due to his abusive nature.
And we both have a complete dander-head in each family; my step-mother and her aunt #2... these two are complete hippy-fluffers if hippy-fluffers had the intelligence of a slightly wet rock.

No problems with her mother and father, in general.
Her mom is really a nasty piece of work when enraged, though, that's true. For example, we were discussing candidates for the presidential run: She said the current president (Lula) should stay. I'm the opposite: I want Alckmin (who's more like a industrial president, opposed to Lula. Anyway, she started defending him so vehemently that I've just put down my argument and stopped discussing, or things would get really nasty, I know. Once she also asked me to help her improving her ways to manage her store, and each thing I suggested would be replied with "no I dont want to bother that way, I want this way" then I said that "nothing comes without a price" she replied "its a price I dont want to bother paying" and the thing stopped there, with a mild joke and a smile from me.
Her father is kinda off he likes football, and dont speak much, we only talk about football and formula one, very quickly. He's a very nice person, very simpathetic, and a tottally awesome cook.
But honestly, I dont mind. My life is meant to be sepparated. I wont live under their ceiling, I wont depend on them to eat, so the thing is cathegorical: you <insert censored word here> your get what you're seeking. They dont bother me cause I'm extra carefull not allowing it, but when they do they'll know how am I disturbed by this, one way (nice) or the other (nasty).

When my family gets together, I'm more worried how much it will cost to rebuild the house we met in. Both sides together is just tempting fate.

I get along well with all my "out-laws" if by that, you mean no conflicts. The problem is that everybody in my hubby's family except for his brother (who lives in the US btw so I don't see him that often) just bore me to death. I sleep better in my bed, that's the only difference.
