Are you playing with any mods? If so, please provide a list.

Does the person dislike you? The less they like you, the higher the prices.

Do you have corprus or any other disease? I know I've noticed the prices go up if I try to use them while diseased.

well i cant solve your probelm but it seems to me it doesnt really matter. if youre that far in the game i woudl guess that 300 drakes would be peanuts to you.
im not far past that quest and 300 isnt even pocket change....

obviously it would be better solved but i tihnk restarting the game would be really extreme form the sake of loosing a extra coins (youd loose more than that restarting anyway)

The longer the distance, the more it costs.

And if you leave the mage's guild, then the mage transport is more expensive (and vice versa, if you join it's cheaper).
In memorian: Fiona; Ravager; Lestat; Phreddie; and all of those from the 1500 incident. Lest we forget.

Highest boat fare I have ever seen is like Tel Branora to Sadrith Mora(I BELIEVE), if I am right that one can get upwards of 90 gold if the guy doesn't like you.

In this case, I happen to know it as an odd happening. Happened to me on the Xbox version as well once, but meh, I sucked it up and decided to use a leapfrog method for traversing the great province.

Basically get Divine and Almsivi Intervetion and use them, coupled with Recall at times, to hoptoad yourself around the continent. It can't get you everywhere, but if you don't want to pay their high prices, it does work.
Finally running a decent computer!
