but the thing is that with the crossbows you shoot only once a round (there is one that can shoot twice/round, but that's it), while with bows and rapid shot feat you get more shots (up to 5-6/round), and that alone equals more dmg.
I like to use both. I'll give one party member a bow and another a crossbow. The bows are a lot quicker and if you give them to someone that has high dex they can compensate for the lower damage as they will hit so often. I tend to give a crossbow to someone that I am not intending to use as my main ranged attack so if I need to I can resort to using them to just get one or two powerful shots in to assist my other party members.
