fun times with my wild mage(possible spoilers)
I have always played a melee type as my main character so in my latest game I decided it was time to hone my magical skills. For better or worse I chose to play a Wild Mage  after seeing several posts on how fun & challenging they were. So......Im still in Irenicus' dungeon, I try to Skull Trap some approaching Goblins and end up wearing a red fireshield! I attempt a simple magic missile on an Otyugh, end up casting a death spell on myself but I dont die, so my next desparate attempt to salvage the situation results in two levels of my casting ability being drained!!!!! Am I correct in assuming that this is a pretty normal day in the life of a Wild Mage? If so, I also assume that my magical mishaps are destined to become even more disastrous as I level up Would anyone out there like to share any tips, tricks or amusing tales about their adventures as a Wild Mage?
I have generaly avoided wild mages ever since my second ever Throne of Bhaal game, in which I:
- Turned bright orange instead of casting time stop
- Polymorphed myself into a wolf instead of casting flame arrow (Which sucked, no more magic for the entire battle! Thankfully I was almost done the battle, otherwise I would have reloaded)
- Turned myself into a woman (Which I never actually reversed...It didn't matter much, except that I had a wizened old man portrait, and a rather deep voice )
- Horrified my entire party when I cast horror on them instead of dispel magic
- Decreased multiple caster levels while casting various spells (Many of which failed miserably)
And finally:
- Slowed myself when casting an improved haste spell (Kind of a letdown for the last thing I can remember happening, isn't it?)
It was a fun game, but I've never played a wild mage since then

In the back of the manual (the Throne of Bhaal one?... can't remember) there is a table with the various effects you can experience.aldazir wrote:I have always played a melee type as my main character so in my latest game I decided it was time to hone my magical skills. Also there are 2 spells which you can use to attempt to improve the result you might get - although I can remember their names either ).
Wild Mage can be "fun", but it is definately not a first-run kind of character

These experiences with a Wild Mage always make me giggle a little and make me want to take some of them along for the ride, just to spicen the Baldurs Gate excitement up.
A party with Minsc, Imoen as a Wild Mage, Dalis, Jan and Korgan must make things pretty wacky.

There's Chaos Shield and I think Greater Chaos Shield that improves one's chances of getting a good roll. Mind you the higher the level a Wild Mage the better chance of getting a good effect.
I think it's fun though playing as a wild mage, though dangerous.

, it has yet to return
Wild mage are clearly for players that has played the game a thousand times and knows it inside out, to give them something unpredictable and fun. I like the wild mage myself while doing normal runs, but I'd stay out of it while playing ascension/tactics etc.
I mean, last stage of Improved Irenicus and you... turn into a sheep, hit yourself with a fireball, makes it rains cow...?
Hillarious in the vanilla game, hideous in modded.

That is pretty much the party I plan to end up with, replacing Imoen with Viconia (for romance) after her capture, then (maybe) bumping Jan when we get Imoen back. Im also curious to see how two Beserkers perform as a main tank (if I can avoid turning them into squirrels in the heat of the moment ) Wish me luck...LOL.Sytze wrote:These experiences with a Wild Mage always make me giggle a little and make me want to take some of them along for the ride, just to spicen the Baldurs Gate excitement up.
