How do you get lvl 10 spells?

Post by Daxtreme »

Well yeah I used the search and it seemed for everybody that level 10 spells were gained automatically, but I'm in ToB since a lot of time and I'm lvl 21 Wizard and I still never got any level 10 spell.

How do you get one ?

P.S. : I started ToB as a level 22 Fighter, 19 Wizard, 26 Thief (Around that) with level 9 spells already. Maybe you earn them at the same time you earn level 9 spells ?

Thanks to anyone who answers my question :)

When you reach 3,050,000 experience points, you are given the chance to select a High Level Ability every time you character levels up. In other words, 10th Level spells are High Level Abilities. They include Dragon's Breath, Comet, Improved Alacrity, Energy Blades, etc.

The question that needs to be answered for us to help you is, how did you create your character? Did play that character in Shadows of Amn before you installed Throne of Bhaal, or did you use Shadowkeeper? If you had Throne of Bhaal installed all along, your character should have plenty of High Level Abilities by now, including those from the Warrior pool and the Thief pool.

It could either be the confusing part of level10 spells actually being in your level9 spellbook, or your character is, like VonDondu said, created on the wrong way. If you cheated you character to those levels that you described, you won't have picked up the high-level-abilities.

I created my char on ToB and he started as a level 12 or 13. Then I decided it sucked and I exported/imported it in SoA then played from the beginning.... But as a level 12 instead of 7.

As a matter of fact, I started gaining High Level Abilities in SoA, not in ToB. I already have 20x imp. whirlwind, and magic resistance and other things but I never saw any 10 Level Spells in the list.

Is it in the same list? Because even when I level up in Mage I can choose Whirlwind....

P.S. I'm fighter/mage/thief.

EDIT: Added a screenshot of when I'm leveling up, in the Special Abilities menu. Note that I received 2 levels at once : Fighter, and Mage.

Right, I forgot. You're a 3-way multiclassed character, that explains it. :)

You see, the max experience a character can get combined is 8.000.000. It's split through the multi-classes of your character. And since you're 3 classed, you get 8.000.000/3 = ~2.700.000 exp for each class.

At 2.700.000 exp with a mage, you're not able to cast level 9 spells, and you never will be. You will however get high-level abilities. The developers thought of this and made it so that you can't choose level 10 spells since you won't be able to cast them. :)

So, 3 classed character can't choose HLA spells. As simple as that.

Power-leveling mages are for Diablo II and WoW. If you want to try out 10 spells, start a fresh ToB games. You'll be starting with about 2.950.000 exp and get HLAs the second after.

Thrifalas, you are correct. 10th Level spells aren't available to a Fighter/Mage/Thief since you cannot be an 18th level triple-class Mage under an 8 million point experience cap. The developers took them off the list. I was thrown off by the fact that Daxtreme said his character is a 21st Level Mage.

A clarification might be in order. Once a character reaches 3,050,000 experience points, he starts gaining High Level Abilities. That doesn't mean you need to have 3,050,000 experience points in each class if you play a multi-class character. It refers to the total amount of experience. For example, a triple-class 12th Level Fighter/12th Level Mage/14th Level Thief gets High Level Abilities. I just wanted to make sure everyone understood that.

Yes, a Fighter/Mage can cast 10th Level spells in Throne of Bhaal. You will be able to select them when your character reaches 18th Level (the level required to cast 9th Level spells). If I recall correctly, you will need 6 million experience points to have a multiclass 18th Level Mage.

In the meantime, after you have reached 3 million experience points, you will be able to select all of the other High Level Abilities available to a Fighter/Mage, such as Whirlwind Attack (from the warrior pool) and Cast An Extra 6th Level Spell (from the Wizard pool). The 10th Level spells appear on the Abilities page, but they are blacked out until you reach 18th Level.

Thanks man. Alot :P

Now I'm fixed. I was like "Did I do something wrong ?", "Am I bugged?" and you can guess many other possibilities.

P.S. Fighter/Mage/Thieves are overpowered ;) It's a "Shame" they can't get Level 10 spells :D

Make a runthrough with a fighter/mage and see what you like that instead. ;)

You could install an XPcap remover and go from there, then you will be able to get 10th level spells.

If you wish to edit this yourself then place the following code in notepad and save the file with the name and extension xpcap.2da

Code: Select all

2DA V1.0
2950000
                        VALUE
MAGE -1
FIGHTER -1
CLERIC -1
THIEF -1
BARD -1
PALADIN -1
DRUID -1
RANGER -1
FIGHTER_MAGE -1
FIGHTER_CLERIC -1
FIGHTER_THIEF -1
FIGHTER_MAGE_THIEF -1
MAGE_THIEF -1
CLERIC_MAGE -1
CLERIC_THIEF -1
FIGHTER_DRUID -1
FIGHTER_MAGE_CLERIC -1
CLERIC_RANGER -1
MONK -1
SORCERER -1
Place the file in your Override folder in the game folder on your computer.

Not with a triple-class Fighter/Mage/Thief. I already tried it, and the 10th Level spells never became available.

Ah okay, I see.

This is because each class selects their High Level Abilities from a particular pool depending on the file luabbr.2da which says FMT's should use the file luFMT.2da which doesn't exist. So I'm guessing it defaults to another pool...probablys luFT0.2da and that doesn't include mage HLA's.

You could create a 2da file based on luFM0.2da and luFT0.2da that includes the HLA's for mages but thats a lot of work. Probably easier just to give yourself the spells via shadowkeeper if you're that high a level.

Rabain, I'm not familiar with those files, but it's more complicated than that. A triple-class Fighter/Mage/Thief can acquire some of the abilities from the Wizard pool, such as Cast An Extra Sixth Level Spell, Cast An Extra Seventh Level Spell, etc., but the 10th Level spells are excluded from the list. I'm guessing that there must be a unique resource file that determines which abilities are available for a Fighter/Mage/Thief, because the list for that type of character is different from the list for every other spellcasting character. I think you're onto something in regard to those .2da files, but I agree it's easier just to give your character those spells with Shadowkeeper if you can't live without them.

Well I used ShadowKeeper because I don't wish to level up a Fighter/Mage.

Simply because I like beinga thief too, and IMHO thief class is really needed. I'm exactly the same (Didn't even hack myself any stat or new spell slots) but with Improved Alacrity :)

Thanks for the tip Rabain, and VonDondu.

I can honestly say that if you ever roll a fighter/thief/mage and use XP cap remover, you wont need level 10 spells. Nothing included in tactics, ascension or the solaufein mod will stand a chance against you. :) Time Stop and Imprisonment will take up all your slots anyway.

Actually my slots are : Time Stop, Time Stop, Improved Alacrity

I find other spells being useless... Does Imprisonment give xp ?

Anyways : Another detial I hate...

I can't have the feats giving lvl 6, 7, and 8 spell slots. So I have only 5 lvl 8 slots (All taken by Abi Dalzhim :P ) but I'd like to have more actually...

Anyways. The only monster who resisted me was Demogorgon, since at first I cast Time Stop (Only to see he's immune) and then the other try I casted Simulacrum and Project Image (Perma-True Sight) so it was useless....

At the end I had 3x Improved Alacrity as my lvl 9 spells and I just spammed lower resist + Abi-Dalzhim.

His damn stun/held/50dmg is really annoying :)

Yep. Improved Alacrity-Lower Resistance(x4)-Horrid Wilting(x5) will annihilate just about anything in the game, and it is "party friendly", too. It's a great combination for a Sorcerer. You gotta love that Improved Alcarity.

However, if you're playing a Fighter/Thief/Mage, it seems to me that other kinds of tactics, namely melee-oriented tactics, would be a lot more fun when it comes to most battles.
