Blades are sooo....

Post by Kolgrim »

I recently begun playing the game with a blade and my oh my. A Blade has got high charisma from the start it can cast lvl 6 mage spells, it can bardsing, can wear armour, can get to level 23 with the experience cap (lot of thaco minuses)! it can pickpocket and use three slots in two weapon style. It almost the same ability as the kensai (kai) only better because he gets hasted. He has the defensive stance which lowers his armour class. He´s got great Lore values. hmm did I forget something....

well well... In my opinion the blade is the best alround class in the game!

What do you think?

Actually, Skalds are clearly the best bard class. Blades don't impress me much.

Blades are decent backup spell casters -- all Bards are.

They get combat bonuses, but even dual wielding only get 2 attacks unless offensive spinning and then they get 3. Fighters get 4 dual wielding without any special ability. Additionally, their Thac0 never gets that great. Yes they get bonuses, but that is compared to the relatively weak thief Thac0. They are weak on HP, although stoneskin helps.

Blades can sing, but it doesn't get better with levels...so you might as well forget it. That level 1 bard song isn't doing much. A high level Skald song on the other hand...

Best all around character without looking at dual classes is the monk: Stealth, Trap Detection, great special abilities, great armour class and attack, magic resistance, etc.

Point taken but i still like the blade better. I like having special abilitys on my characters not just automatic bonuses like the skald has. I dont think that i´ts right comparing a fighters fighting abiliteis with a bards. Its like comparing apples and oranges Image You are right about the HP:s A bard gets the same amount of HP at cons 18 as cons 16. But i just take those two points and put them on int instead.

Maybe the monk is the best char... never tried him myself but i think i will soon. But not be able to wear an armour disturbes me. Didn´t know about the magic recistanse thou...

Keep em posts comming Image

Tenser's transformation with bards is really nice, Thac0 of a level 23 fighter, and you can use the same weapons and cast certain spell before Tenser's (Mirror Image, Stoneskin)

Personnaly, I like beserker mage with Tenser's, something like 290 HP ; ) Mine took out the Ogre bounty hunter and his lackies in the underdark solo. without even getting below half health or using one healing potion.

Nighthawk, you are absolutely right! While I think blades are underappreciated for their good qualities, monks are far better overall, for the reasons you so thoroughly stated. Again.

But evryone remember that AC isn´t the same thing as armour protection. If you get hit and have no armour you will get hurt....

I love blades, and bards in general, but point for point, a warrior class will kick their butt. After BGI, I'm sick of them though. Hack, slash, hammer, blah, boing, whop. It's all the same after a while. Image

I've just started an attempt to solo a blade. Haven't done anything major, but have just hit lvl 15 so I can get cracking now. (Skeleton warriors, hooray!) If nothing else, it will be a challenge. Image

Kolgrim: I think you're misunderstanding something with armour. Beyond the AC you get from it, the only thing armor gives you is a few extra points of AC for specific weapon attacks. You take just as much damage when you get hit. Yes, this doesn't really resemble RL, but that's the way the game works.

The way AC was explained to me is that:

it is the ability to avoid being injured by enemy blows. Platemail is like a tank, not a lot misses you, but not a lot hurts you either.

When you have AC of 0 because of plate, and someone with a THAC0 of 5 rolls a ten or whatever, it should say, So-and-So hits you but doesn't do anything to you because of the divinely blessed sheets of iron you are wearing... it just says they miss for the sake of gameplay fun.

Leather armour on the other hand, doesn't hinder movement, but will deflect glancing blows.
