I've cracked open the game (in fact me and my brother bought a new verson of both the games and the expansion packs.) again after all these years. Well I made my character and I ended up facing Mae'var. Well I've gone up against hime multiple time each one ending up with my main character dieing within seconds, and NPChunks flying everywhere. I've tried fire ball, I've tried Stinking cloud I've tried entanglement all these things to keep my character from dieing and it hasn't worked.
Its not as though my PC is a weak mage I put up on the front line, he has when buffed 160 HPs and an AC of about -1. All the others have similiar ACs.
I have Minsc, Jaheria, Yoshimo, Viconia and Aeries.
Could some one give me advice or tactics to help defeat Mae'var and his cronies
Battling Mae'var
Jahiera and Viconia? I'd personally change them (to who is your preferance, for me it would be Edwin and the Cleric/Fight in the Copper Coronet, or the Inquisitor in the sewers).
Beating Mae'Var... curse my knowledge for forgetting who he is or where he is...
Oh, now I know who he is... yes, Edwin will be VERY effective at taking him out. Send down a pair of Twin Fireballs and followed by a Cloud Kill, a Web, an Entangle if you have one, a Stinking Cloud, and maybe even a Meteor Shower kind of spell. Then fill that room full of more Fireballs, Flame Arrows, Magic Missiles, Acid Arrows, arrows, bullets, bolts and all manner of missile weapons/spells. When the clouds dissipate, send in Minsc and your Main Character, plus your Cleric (Viconia is a liability, the Cleric/Fighter is much better at this), and clean up what's left. Of course, with all these Fireballs, Cloudkills and whatnot, you might just have managed to wipe out any prisoners in their cages, but Mae'Var is worth it... and if anyone can live through that amount of Firepower, then it's a Red Dragon, or perhaps Sarevok or Irenicus...
With your current party, I'd suggest Bearing Jaheira and sending her in alone while Minsc and your Main tank the little guys around, and keep blasting Mae'Var with Magic Missiles, bullets, Magic Stones, and whatever other missiles you can get your grubby little protubances on.
If you have the Spells, Protection From Evil 10' Radius followed by a Gate right next to Mae'Var. Now THAT is deadly (and it's how I pretty much take care of everything that I dislike a lot).
If nothing else works, cheat for a Killsword and then butcher Mae'Var and sling the sword away.
What Level's are your Characters? To be struggling on Mae'Var you must really have low leveled Characters (from Level Squatting or by Cheating their Experience lower), or you've got it on hardest setting...

I'd stick with the party you enjoy for role playing reasons however if you want a powerfull tank get Korgan (copper corronet) . Are you killing Mae'var as part of the quest ?? could be that you get owned because of a scripted event, try stealing from the storekeep in Mae'vars guild and getting caught you'll see what I mean. Mae'var should not be hard fight at all I'm stumped. I've done him with an avg party level of about 10-11 and he barely did any dmg to me, I can easly envision killing him straight out of Irenicus dundgeon (after assembling my team)
anyway tactics for the fight: haste your team slow them that works wonders. after that pelt him with magic missle, summon up a few animals before the fight, if not you may try spells that affect their AI such as horror or emotion and if the spells are not sticking try greater malison before that. Minsc alone should be able to tank that group but if your weak chars are getting slaughtered then cast stoneskin on anybody who can cast it and invisibility on everyone else. tanks up front casters behind acting as artillery and take out whatever mages or clerics are in that group first. good luck
Edit: exactly what buffs are you using to get a mages hp to 160 ?? thx

Ah my mad, I was saying he wasn't a weak mage. He is a Stalker, with 18 in all combat stats. And yes I am using tactics. I think I may try at it again using more holding spells, although I had tried hold and slow before.
To clear things up my party is about 9-8 in level, I don't know if thats low (its been a while since I played and by the sounds of it it is low).
Anyway thanks

True Sight, Stoneskin, and a lot of fodder are the answers here.
Let both Jah and Vic cast True Sight and no enemy will be hidden, and thus no enemy will be able to backstab you. Then quickly take Mae'var out with arrows, backstabs and magic (missles, flame arrows, etc).
