[First post in forum] Help installing M&M IV,V (WoX), and sound problems

Post by Nom1fan »

Hi all! my first post... nice to meet you all, it seems like a nice community you got here :)

Anyway, I got a problem I really hope you could solve for me, it goes like this:

I ordered the Millenium Edition of M&M IV,V,VI,VII (+World of Xeen+Swords of Xeen) from CSaccess.com a week ago.

Now I inserted CD #1 in and tried to install, simply clicking Setup.exe...
Disappointingly, nothing happens...

When I go to Task Manager->Processes I see there is a Setup.exe existing, and if I click again another one pops there...and another if I click it again, etc.

I'm really confused about this, It's a Millenium Edition so you an call it relatively "new" (as in the developers were already aware of the existence of Windows® at the time they published the edition) and I still can't seem to install it....

All sugguestions you have will be accepted happily,

Thanks in advance,
Mor.

Try opening the CD, right-click on the setup file, select properties and then compatibility and change it to an earlier version of Windows. I can't guarantee this will work but I've had quite a few older games that refused to run/install on XP until I had changed the compatibility to something like 95 or 98.

Edit:Oh, I forgot to add welcome to GameBanshee :)

Thanks alot, happy to join :)

Thanks for the quick reply man!

Anyway, my situation has changed... I've switched to my other OS (Win98) and successfully installed World of Xeen & Swords of Xeen using it.

Now I have a different problem. When Activating the game in Win98 (after configuring audio to use Soundblaster Pro) I get an OK functioning game...by saying "OK" I mean it isn't perfect yet. Sometimes the animation runs too fast and there's frequent noises in speech.

I understand it can work perfectly using VDMsound or DosBox... The problem is, when I try using those (either in XP and Win98) I get this line:

"No CD-ROM drive or MDCDEX.exe is not loaded!"

Thus, I cannot activate the game using DosBox in my Win98 (which is what I think will solve the few problems I have left)

No one mentioned anything about this line before, at least not that I know of!

I hope you can help me,
Mor.

P.S

I don't know if this is a sound affect problem or this is just the way the game is, but I get no attack sound affects (while casting magic or shooting arrows for instance) nor steps sound affects, and no music in-game!

I'm going to move this to the Tech Support forum as you may get more help there. I'll also change the title so people know you are also having sound problems :)

ok this is how it is...

I've sort of found a solution to my problem...It isn't perfect yet, but is sure is alot better than nothing, and it's relatively complex (at least not in a way you can get to this solution from scratch)

So it's like this: in DosBox, type in the next command:

(if F:\ is CD-ROM Drive letter , then :)

mount F: F:\ -t cdrom -usecd 0 -ioctl "/" -aspi

either -ioctl or ("/") -aspi in the end should be ok, personally I only tried with the -ioctl ending...

It still doesn't work perfectly on xp, but i'll try on my Win98 and let you know..plus, if it will be neccessary i'll check with the -aspi ending as a last resort.
