Several problems, mirrors and werewolves

Post by Argon the Axe »

Hey all, I'm brand-new to this game and LOVING it, but I have a problem and also a few questions that maybe some of you can help me with.

The problem, first and foremost, is this: my party has just killed the werewolves behind the Iuz mirror on temple level two, after several attempts (party slain, reloaded save, you get it), but somehow at the end of combat the mirror itself became a combatant, although the mirror just takes a long time and then does nothing in the turn sequence. I can't seem to hit the thing, and I've tried ending the combat by casting area-effect spells (dispel magic, fireball, sound burst), just to do ANYTHING. Nothing. Then I ran all over this level (TURN-BASED, mind you: VERY, VERY ANNOYING) to get away from it and maybe to end combat. Is this a bug or am I missing something here???

Which brings me to a few questions:
1. Is there a way to end combat manually, without killing everything on the screen? The manual says that keyboard command 'C' is to TOGGLE combat, but it doesn't TOGGLE off...
2. I just bought this game (jewel box edition, from a retailer for a STEAL of a price), and was wondering what version I had, if Atari put ToEE out with any newer patches already installed. I haven't had any problems with looting (except for those pesky NPC's getting first pick!!), only with the colored tabs for quick inventory/weapon changes (they haven't worked since Hommlet/Lv2 chars). Does the game display which version you're running anywhere in it?

That's all I can think of right now, any and all help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Hmm, I've actually never heard of this mirror problem before. I suppose you could use the console to teleport back to hommlet (see the sticky thread on console commands), but only if you've got patch 2 installed.

I've heard some say that patches don't always work well with the jewelcase version (and the download version MUST be avoided like the plague. I expect there would be a readme file somewhere on the disc, if you explore it. That'll probably tell you if there are any patches installed.

If not, patch it. You do NOT want to play this game unpatched. The most stable pure form is patch 2 and temple.zip. There's a great expansive fan mod available at co8.org, but it makes the game harder and adds a lot of original content, so I recommend it for a second play-through at the earliest.

(Use the lastest 1.3 build - it's still beta, but stable and far better than 1.2)

It is possible to play with the co8 mods w/o using any of the extra content, and still get the benefit of the bug fixes. Just install the mod. pack normally, start the front-end, but don't highlight the co8 tab when launching ToEE. If you highlight this tab then launch the game you get a mssg saying that this is your time and the module needs to be installed (300MB), YES/NO. If you get this mssg and don't want to inst the mod., hit NO (duh), highlight the normal option (can't remember what it's called off-hand) then launch.

btw, you need patch 2 to use the co8 mods.
Sorry for the double post, but the forum wouldn't let me edit. I'm sure it's due to the same problems I've had on other forums.

OK, so I've since been back to the mirror/werewolves' area, and defeated them without the mirror joining the combat, so I guess that was just a freaky bug.
I'm still not through the game yet, but am so tempted to just say 'the hell with it' and start using the co8 mods, I really want to kill my NPC's for taking important loot, and am sick of filling their inventories with leather gloves and boots from random brigand encounters. ;) So here's another (probably silly) question:
If I install patch 2 (over my existing patch 3) and the co8 patches, will my savegames still work? Will I lose my party completely? I'd hate to see them go, now that we're at LV. 9 and all...

I know that previous saves cannot be used with co8 5.0, But if I'm remembering right they can be used with 4.0. You'd have ask on the co8 boards to make sure, or check the readme file.

If you're worried about your saves, you can alter the NPC AI and give yourself control over their inventories with Drifter's Humble NPC patch, which applies right on top of a patch 2 configuration. See the sticky thread for instructions.
