All Mage party.

Post by Onkel Bob »

I'm starting up another party that will play very differently from the party without spellcasters I've also got going. Just for the sake of variety I suppose. This one will be as follows:

Kelsey (Sorcerer NPC from a mod)
Aerie
Jan (replacing him with Imoen possibly)

The protagonist will either be a beserker dual'ed to mage or a fighter/mage. Which one would you use? Please explain reasons behind choice.

And would you keep Jan?

Now you don't need to tell me that this party will have a hard time with some battles but the problems they will have will be very different from the ones my other party will be having. This should make it interesting.

I would solidly support the fighter/mage. With the somewhat limited party size, you should be able to level-up the multiclass fairly quickly, and since he would presumably be your tanking option (barring summons) the continuing fighter levels would be to your benefit. Also, since you're already full of mages, you don't really need to achieve the mage levels of a dual-class character as fast as possible. The major powers that distinguish a fighter/mage are almost all achieved in level 6 spells (PMW, Mislead, Improved Haste, Contingency, Tensers).

I would definitely say to take Jan. I hate playing without recourse to thieving skills. With this party especially, Jan would be super-fun. All your other guys can casually look on your enemies, tossing spells from a nice vantage point, while Jan suddenly pops up in their frontline to backstab (of course Jan's mislead clone is with the others) and then routes the rest of them with Carsomyr(post-UAI).

Since you're bringing in mods like Kelsey, I'd also recommend using the Swash/Mage-Imoen mod.

Well, it all depends on what type of player you are.

If you're a bug/cheese user, then I would suggest playing a Wild Mage as they have the biggest bug in all of the games I've played. (No casting delay and unlimited spells. One hell of a bug, eh?)

If not, then I'd suggest that you stick with the sorcerer like you did, or maybe choose a Thief/Mage (Illusionist/Thief is the better choice in my book, as you get one extra slot. It'll be valuable as you won't get as many slots as a normal mage) or get an Assassin and Dual Class him to a Mage when his backstab reaches x7. (There's also another bug where you can spam backstab.)

Definately keep Jan if you're not going to use a Mage/Thief as they're the biggest XP gainers. (Scrolls, Traps AND locks, not to mention that you can steal most of the scrolls from stores and make a hefty income.)

I tried to track that one down with no luck. Do you have a link?

It has been included as part of the refinements-mod. It's listed at Spellhold Studios, but for some reason the links there aren't working so I can't provide an exact link.

Ok so the party is going to be like this:

1: Protagonist: Gnome Fighter/Illusionist
2: Aerie
3: Jan
4: Kelsey (from the mod)
5: Edwin (replacing him with Imoen when I get her back)

Do anyone know if Edwin will start trouble with any of the others? I think he might just be mean to Aerie which could probably prove to be fun.

And I installed a mod so that Imoen is a swashbuckler that dual'ed at level 10 right in the beginning of BG2.
