Why am I not levelling up?

Post by The Yank »

Mu character is a fighter (Nord) and I am on level 8 (eight).

I have closed 4 oblivian Gates
I'm Grand Champion in the Arena
I'm Journeyman in the Fighters Guild
I'm a Warlock in the Mages Guild
I'm journeyman with sword

On the Main Quest I have just closed the Bruma Gate
I find fighting very easy to the point where I stopped wearing my heavy armour and where my mages cloak instead.

I spent ages WALKING from town to town before I realised I could Fast Travel. That might have built up my fighting skills a bit.

Overall though doesn't level 8 sound a bit low for those?

I must be doing something dumb - but what? Any ideas?

you have to look at your main abilities, probably one of those is lagging behind and keeps you from levelling.

Search the forum - there are several good threads on leveling tips. Having said that, here are a couple of relevant thoughts:

1) Most enemies level up with you (to a point) so for most quests it doesn't really matter what level you are (one notable exception - the Daedric quests have minimum level requirements to even start the mission). In fact, some people think the game is hardest for a mid-level character (around level 20, give or take). At lower levels the enemies are weaker, and at ultra-high levels even the most powerful enemies are less of a challenge.

2) Leveling up is entirely controlled by increasing your major skills. So, if you want to level up faster, concentrate on practicing those. If you want to level up slower, avoid using them.
Can the answer to this question be "No"?

Its not just that you have to rest is it? You only level up when you sleep in a bed (one hour will do). After all that fighting you could use a rest anyway.

He's achieved level 8, ishuman, so I imagine he has figured out about sleeping to level. :) I think it most likely that he is using minor skills more than major skills, as Belthan and Ultima suggested.

Yeah, no doubt. It's a rule that I tend to forget about though since it works so differently than the D&D rules that I'm used too.
