Locks that can't be picked

Post by Nitfol »

Here's another newbie question:

Normally if I come to a locked door, get the lock icon, and press "E", I'll at last try to pick the lock. If it's too difficult, I still try to pick it, and fail.

But for some locks, nothing at all happens - I don't even try to pick the lock.
In some cases this is because it's an electronic lock (with a key pad or a
card slot) but sometimes the lock icon just looks like a normal padlock and I still can't even try picking the lock.

What's happening here? Does this mean that I just shouldn't bother with that door? Is there any difference from the doors that are obvious props and don't even have any locks?

Sometimes doors need keys.. and other times, the doors lead no where.. they're just props in the game. During quests you might eventually find a key to those doors. So don't stress! You'll find them soon enough :)

Yes, I've noticed that.

But I guess what I'm wondering is: if a door has a lock that I can't even try to pick, does this mean that the door is important, but I'm not supposed to open it just yet? This as opposed to the doors that I'm just not skilled enough to pick or the ones that are pure props (and don't even have locks or handles).

If you get the red-highlighted lock, the door is pickable, although you might not have enough skill. If you get the door icon, the door is already unlocked. If you get neither, then either you require a key, or the door can't be opened by you directly (perhaps by somebody else), or the door simply can't be opened. The lower floors of the SkyLine are an example. You can't pick them, or open them, and they don't have a key. There is, however, an alternate way of getting in. That may be why the door can't be picked and there is no key - as a signal to you that there is another way in. It may also mean that the door can't be opened until something happens. The Voermann sisters door is an example. While they're talking, you can't open the door. When they stop, it's unlocked.

All the lock means is that the door leads to somewhere. The prop doors are, however, exactly that. Just a prop - there is no map for the other side of the door. If you cheat yourself through a prop door, chances are that you will find yourself in game limbo - outside the mapped areas.
