Solo/No Micromanaging?

Post by Katomerellin »

Hey all, I'v had this game for a very long time but I never realy got anywhere in the game and just put it away because the constant need to micromanage every character in every battle and now I was wondering if it is possible to solo the game (Just you, no party or atleast with just one or two companions) or atleast get the companions to manage themselves in battle so I dont need to constantly micromanage them through the battles to get them to use their skills and fight and stuff (I hate the micromanaging that seems to be needed) So is it possible to solo or would it be too hard?

You can assign scripts to your characters like auto-attacking. If party AI is on they follow them.

Soloing is possible and it can be even easier than playing a party game.

I recommend to install some components from the EoU mod, especially higher item stacking, max HP at level up, XP cap remover and flawless spell learning to remove even more annying things from the game.

You dont want EoU, its outdated as heck. What you want is the new BG2Tweak Pack from G3 located here: The Gibberlings Three Forums -> Tweak Packs Forums

G3 has alot of super high quality mods that make playing the game over and over alot more fun and different.

They also have the eseries AI scripts that are very well made so micromanaging is greatly reduced.

I'm not an expert at this game but I feel that in most parties I need two people that can fight, one that can cast arcane magic, one that can cast divine and one that can steal. I do have some other parties going in order to challenge myself where I deviate from this formular. But this is how my standard parties look. Sometimes I have more than just covered my bases too.

Now one person can fill out more than one job, but my parties never end up being more smaller than three. I could see two succeding where the main character was a fighter/mage/thief and you pick up an NPC that covers fighting and divine casting. I'm not sure that I could do it though as I like to have more arcane power.

Edit: Just about anything that covers more than one role would do in a three man party.

I've found that a solo sorc (elf for the extra dex, but not important really) can handle whatever's thrown at them. Thieves are also cool because of the Use Any Item. Makes them able pull of a lot of cheese or semi-cheese strats. And berzerker/clerics usually can stay alive no matter what.

If you're looking for a real challenge try Beastmaster or wizardslayer. But don't say I didn't warn you... :speech:

Solo is fun because you only have to care for and manage one character. Easier to run and dogde and you'll quickly have the equipment you want (loads of cash see) along with fast leveling.

Last time I played the game through I decided I wanted something simple and fun, ie low on micromanagement, but still challenging. Eventually decided on the following:

Half-elf Ranger-Cleric: ok so you need to do some spell selection but its not too bad. With this guy/gal as your main character you don't need a second divine caster.
Elven Mage-Thief: again some spell selection needed, check out the sorceror solo guide as it will tell you the spells you absolutely need.
Human Inquisitor: having true sight and dispel magic easily accessible is handy, and it means you can weild the holy avenger.

And that was it, 3 characters reduces the ammount of messing about you have to do in combat. You have 2 characters who are more than reasonable in a fight and a 3rd who once you get staff of the magi is pretty handy as well.

You could also have a full 6-member party and use the provided AI scripts. ;)
Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocre minds. The latter cannot understand it when a person does not thoughtlessly submit to hereditary prejudices but honestly and courageously uses their intelligence.

You can solo the game with any character, so go with whatever one suits you best. However, naturally the game is either easier or tougher depending on that character class. For example, Fighters have a low-to-medium difficulty for the first third of the game and after that it gets a lot easier (I advise against them having tried a Stalker and Beserker...becomes very hack n slash, though Stalker is a little more interesting). Something like a Sorcerer or Mage/Thief might have some troubles at the beginning and will need to be worked around before they have enough spells and items to make them highly powerful.

Half-Elf Ranger/Cleric, Elven Fighter/Thief and an Elven Sorcerer

Good luck finding something better.
