Pretty sure that out of all the NWN series, only Shadows of Undrentide and Hordes of the Underdark have any relavent connection. I would recommend that if you do decide to get NWN 1, go for the expansions as otherwise it's not worth it. The first story was seriously lacking in depth, but it could be alright of a story if your into linear types and/or are learnign how DND works.

NWN 2 though, is not related to NWN 1 If I remember correctly.

I would recommend NWN Gold/Platinum/Diamond/whatever (the more precious it sounds the better, duh...) edition since you would have all extensions plus premium modules included.
I don't think the original NWN story was as bad as some people say. It was no masterpiece but neither were 99% of all other games' storylines. Just a regular run of a mill. And the HoU and the mods were pretty good, in my opinion. Overall, it is one of the best RPG on the market. :)

I can't vouch for Neverwinter Nights, seeing that it didn't really appeal to me but I have to agree that it's good because a friend of mine really enjoyed the game and played it like 4-8 times with different character classes (and yes, including the expansion packs as well).

P.S. Even if I like this game, I doubt that I would want to play it that many times as I would certainly go crazy playing the same game over and over again.
