Halo1,2
Perhaps by console standards Halo is an outstanding FPS, but honestly I can't imagine playing multiplayer Halo over something like UT2K4 or even CS:S.
I doubt a controller can match the precision of a mouse and keyboard, but then again I'm not exactly proficient with its use, so I can't comment here. The idea of limited weapons is something stolen from countless games, perhaps most famous of all CS.
Just off the top of my head here are 5 FPS that are better then Halo:
Half-life 2
Tribes 1/2
UT2K4
System Shock (does this count??)
Deus Ex

it does if deus ex does. they are a rather different type of game to halo, but they have infinitely more imagination.
the controller is certainly inferior to the mouse. I'm a reasonable player, I tend to do well against my friends and online, but there are times when you have to fight the controller. still, the disadvantage is equal, and it usually doesn't hurt the feel of the game.
limited weapons are a feature of a large - and growing - number or FPSs. I'm not sure how much of an innovation it was when it was put in halo. likewise, weapon originality is debatable too. still, in the context of console FPSs, the halo series does show a bit more attention to detail than most.

Personally, the more "revolutionary" game to me was Half-Life. Being an interested game developer, looking through the code in the Half-Life SDK, gob-smacked me. The Grunts (army men) were (at the time), possibly some of the best enemies in any FPS game. I agree though, the claims that Halo 2 has "the best AI ever seen", kinda makes me laugh. The claims they will flank you in squads, has yet to happen to me. So far (had it for a while now), all I've had to do was run through the level. If an enemy saw me, sure he would hide behind something, but its just a matter of running behind HIM while hes peaking around the corner to see if you're there. He doesn't see you, turns back and has a Needler in his face.
But yeah, as I was saying, Half-Life 1 was the game for me..

Best AI ever seen, I doubt it. As much as I dig H1&2, I refuse to give it props for best AI although the AI on legendary in Halo 2 is tight. Best AI on a FPS I've seen was Ghost Recon for the PC, again on the highest level of difficulty (elite, I believe). Anything lower and the bots are fairly predictable.

I think that the PC vs. Console argument is at the root of the problem. The game that everyone answers with when I say "Halo=Best fps ever" is, inevetably, "Half life". Since I am not a big PC gamer, and furthermore because I am a Mac user, I am probably the least qualified of anyone here to explain. However, that won't keep me from hazarding a guess- I mean, when have I ever been known to back down from a bad idea?
PC gamers appreciate the Half Life style more, I think, because it lends itself to the precision that is necessary to online gaming. The same is true of Quake 3. Really competitive gamers always say that the keyboard/mouse is superior to a controller. This I can't argue with. However, I think that level of precision is only truly necessary in multiplayer when you are online.
This is in complete contrast to Halo. The best part of Halo, as I alluded to in my previous post, was the social factor. Sitting in a room with your best buddy, or hooking up 2 boxes and getting 3 v 3 or 4 v 4 and just laughing. The difference between this an Half Life is that you are doing this in the same physical space, not in cyberspace. You can bust your buddy's chops, make fun of them for using cheesy weapons, and generally say things like "and now, the Trojan boner of the week award goes to <insert name here>" when that player blows himself up with the rocket launcher.
As I said before, I am not a serious fps player. But I still think that the Cadillac analogy holds up- a game that all my friends can pile into and use in style, not a PC game that depends heavily on connection speed, lags, etc. This is my opinion, so take it with a grain of salt. However, please don't sell Halo short.

agreed cuch, the best part of halo is the system link. You can do a lan party at your but it's a pain. Setting up a system link in your home for 16 people is pretty easy with minimal planning and hauling.
I've played a ton of FPS on both console and PC, and I prefer a console stick. I'm just better, period. Doesn't matter to me if the keyboard/mouse is easier/better/pick your adjective, it don't work for me.
I don't think there's anything wrong with PC vs. console though. Halo exists on PC

This comment is better suited for the Half Life 2 thread that's kicking around this forum
Also, try not to post in the same thread in such a short time span. It sometimes is an indicator of post farming.

Halo is my ride of choice. If you are thinking about buying it, try to play a friend's copy- someone you know must have it. Personally, I think you should get it- it is the most populart X-Box game for a reason

I'm sorry, I watched your videos, and...they are not good at all. Single kills on bad kids? I was not impressed. Sticking someone at close range so you die? Uh uh. I'll admit that oine of your no scopes in that Midship match was decent but the rest was not montage quality. I'm sorry if I sound a bit rude but my major pet peeve is people saying they own (Lockout Pwnage, and in your credits, "if you want to get your ass handed to you hit me up") and not being able to back it up.
Add l Skinflute l (Lower case L's) if you think you can beat me 1v1 snipers in Halo 2.
