Problems with ... alot!

Post by Jennifer »

Hello!

I have a very frustrating problem at the moment. A few days ago, after several years, I decided to start playing Baldur's Gate, once again. So I started to install it, just to find out that the CD's didn´t work anymore. (By now I had a new PC, that could only read DVD-CDs ... Really sucks!)

-"Ok, too bad", I thought, and ordered it online instead. I actually orderer the full series of Baldur's Gate & Icewind Dale, including expansions, for a very cheap price. (On the package it said that the CD's where DVD-CDs.)

I got the mail the next day, and was thrilled to start playing some, when I found out that only 3 of the 7 CD's where DVD-CDs ... Which ment that I could not play Tales of the Sword Coast, Throne of Bhaal, IWD: Heart of Winter, nor IWD 2. I was terribly disappointed.

However I did have another computer that could install all these games, so I thought that it wasn't THAT bad after all ... But now the really annoying problems started.
Ater installing BG1+ToTSC, I could not play it! I got this error message: "This version will only run on English language operating systems" ...

Am I pissed now or what? Here I am, having ordered the best game ever, and I can't get it to work on any of my computers.

So I guess my problem is (To be short), that one of my computers can't run the NON-DVD-CDs, (But can play the games it can install). The other can't run BG1+ToTSC because it wants an English language operating system, but it can install the NON-DVD-Cds ...

Please help me ! :( Post here with your thoughts or reach me by my E-mail

Hmmm. I always thought DVD-ROMs nowadays can play both CDs *and* DVDs.

Let me see if I understand you correctly:
You bought BG1&2, IWD1&2, and all expansions.
The main games came on "DVD" disks.
The expansions & IWD2 came on "CD" disks.
Your DVD-ROM can read the DVD disks, but not the CD disks. Correct?

You have, of course, tried using the "CD" disks in your DVD-ROM drive, right?

Maybe you need a new(-er) DVD-ROM, that can read both kinds of disks. They're pretty easy to jumper and install...

Side note:
I'd love to have all this stuff on DVD disks, even if it's just the main games. I remember seeing (only) BG1 on DVD a long time ago, but didn't jump on it back then. Where did you get them at?
Why is it that whenever I finally get around to playing a new game for the first time,
I feel like playing Baldur's Gate for the second time...

I'm pretty sure that shouldn't be the case. I've never heard of DVD drives that can't read CDs. What make and model is the drive? Could it perhaps be a problem with your drivers or driver settings, instead?

If we don't get useful responses here, I'll move the thread over to our Tech Support forum. :)

Howdy! Thanks for the reply and I have fixed the problems aswell! (With the "This version ..."
I bought the game on CDON.com, for about 287 Swedish Kronor (38,46 USD). Nice price imo :) But you might have to pay extra for shipment :/

Btw, I know it's wierd that a new PC can't read the CDs, but it's true :( Probably something wrong with it, but I fixed on another PC now. Thanks everyone for the replies

For the person who wanted to know where to get the full set on DVD, I got my copy at PC World about a month ago.

PC Underworld

a few weeks back I posted on here that my PC World purchased collection loaded BG1 fine on my wife's laptop (but not my PC) and then ToSC hung on installation then said that the 'wrong' version purchased would only work in USA and Canada - nobody was able to solve that problem on here.
(I have already got BG2 and ToB installed on both machines.)

Weird.

...and now reaching the end-game, the game crashes on loading the under-city - great!

...and my PC is stripped of several (6) levels when being imported into BG2.

why do we bother?

I had the sam problem with my game ( I have the same "version" as you). The only thing I did was to change the language on windows. Form Swedich to English. Very simple. Try it. Good luck!

Regarding the "Language Error" message

Concerning the message
"This version will only run on English language operating systems"

The following workaround solved the issue for me and I could play BG1 + Expansion on my PC.

Through the computer's control-panel open the "Regional and Language options" in this window go to the "advanced" tab and there in the "Language for non-Unicode programs" list-box you should choose "English" and mark the checkbox below it so it will be assosciated to all user accounts.

This helped me, hopefully it will help you.
Cheers !

There are various problems--this is only one. ;) That's why we have a search function, so that people can find the issue of interest to them. Besides, people don't read sticky threads, even when they contain important forum information.
