The game quits to desktop

Post by Brujah92 »

I've 'just' bought Oblivion and installed it. Works fine until it quits to desktop, then the game freeze and i have to exit and load it again. I've heard quiting to desktop is a general problem in oblivion, but mine is doing it everytime i'm playing it. I've tryed to close down all the programs running in the background but nothing.
Got windows xp but it's a new game and should work..
Any idea what I should to?

2 things.

1, have you updated to the latest patch? If not, go to the official elder scrolls website and grab it.

2, please post your system specifications. That might help. If you don't know them, go to start >>> Run >>> and type in DxDiag and look on that first page, tell us everything there starting with "Operating System" and ending at "Direct X Version"

Of course it could be just the game itself. I played the game normally for a very long time but suddenly what you describe started happening (it is patched). Nothing was changed but suddenly poof and crashing. I just live with it.
And He whispered to me in the darkness as we lay together, Tell Me where to touch you so that I can drive you insane; tell Me where to touch you to give you ultimate pleasure, tell Me where to touch you so that we will truly own each other. And I kissed Him softly and whispered back, Touch my mind.

Try getting rid of the grass. It's very pretty but it can make the game sluggish and likely to crash when a lot of stuff is going on - spellcasting, Oblivion gates, etc. And anyway, it's easier to see alchemy plants and dropped bandit weapons without the grass.

Having said that, my game is always crashing as well. Sometimes to desktop, sometimes to restart.
You should get a message that a report has been compiled and that you should send it to Windows. It might be an idea to do just that. I can't with my games machine because it isn't on-line and it never will be. I don't have the patch either.

It is also a good idea to exit the game after an hour or so play, and close the machine. Go make yourself a drink and a sandwich. Then start up again. Bethesda games don't like being played for a long time. I think they ask a lot of the machine which lets you know it's had enough by crashing! :D

I have a similar problem on XP. If I've been playing for any extended period of time the game crashes when I exit. Sometimes have to kill it with Task Manager, but it usually just kicks me back to Windows with the "Do you want to tell Microsoft our software crashed?" message. Since it doesn't crash while I'm actually playing, I just live with it.

Oh, yeah, one important exception - if I exit right after I save and this crash happens, the savegame is corrupted. So just to be safe I usually save and then walk around a few minutes before I actually exit.
Can the answer to this question be "No"?

Really? I have no such problem. Hm, interesting. But the game does crash after a long period of time of play, that's true. Lately this is how it goes - I play for a shorter time, and then I manage to exit either with a crash or the TM. If I play longer the computer locks up. Meh. And I've played for ages and this is just now happening.

I’ve also tried to live with it. But it is quite frustrating when it keeps quit to desktop every 15 minutes.
Anyway here's my system specifications:

Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Proffesional (5.1, build 2600)
System Manufacturer: EVERCOM NETWORK
System Model: D915PGN_
BIOS: BIOS Date: 09/29/04 13:41:55 Ver: 08.00.10
Processor: Intel® Pentium® 4 CPU 3.20GHz (2 CPUs)
Memory: 2046MB RAM
Page file: 436 MB in use, 3499 MB is available
DirectX-version: DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)

I haven't installed the patch yet, so I'll try that too.

It happens to me frequently too. One think I've taught myself to do is save the game when I've completed certain tasks just so I don't lose a lot of gaming.

Hmmm...what kind of GPU do you have ?

You seem to have a P4 Dual Core machine, but if you have an older graphiccard you might have problems running the game.

But another thing...do you have an on-access antivirus shield running while you are playing the game ?
If you do, try to disable it while running the game. On occasion I have problems with my BitDefender. Apparently it scans the .exe file or something else from the game structure and the game crashes to desktop.

I do know of 2 tips that might help alleviate the crash problem:

1) Try switching the compatibility mode to Windows 98.

2) Try to lower your sound acceleration from the DxDiag menu.

Either one of them will work. Hope this helps. :)

Same thing happens to me so just save frequently.
