Your Love Story

Post by Lady Dragonfly »

What is our life without love? What is RPG without a romance?

I would like to clarify in advance what I called an open-ended romance. This is a romance with a various outcome, e.g. you may choose a passionate sex in the bushes or you may maintain chastity and practice knightly adoration. Or whatever.
Multiple romance means you can romance several NPC at the same time risking their displeasure and reprisal or romance them one after another.
I did not include brothels because this is not "NPC romance" per se.

Love and romance are two different definitions, entirely.
Listen up maggots, Mr. Popo's 'bout to teach you the pecking order.
It goes you, the dirt, the worms inside of the dirt, Popo's stool, Kami, then Popo.

It depends on the nature of the game, particularly RPGs. Some RPGs don't even have romance at all and quite a few do. In my opinion, it really comes down to whether the developer of any RPG would want to include romance or not. It's not really like a trend to include romance/love in an RPG, at least to me.

So, what is your personal opinion? :) Would you like to have a romance with NPC? There is an option to say "don't care".

I don't care for heavy petting with pixels.

My wife might object. ;) :D

You work pinches into a computerized romance, though, and you'll be worth millions. :)

...Hero enters the Temple... Heavenly music...There is a plump priestess kneeling next to a glass box with "Alms for the poor" sign on it.
Hero gives the cleric his best smile and surreptitiously pinches her butt. Then he casually pinches coins from the box while the blushing priestess is giggling...

Ah, but that's not working pinches in--that's working the mention of pinches. This is one of the problems with romances in games: even if we ignore their complete and utter mechanical nature, we still can't ignore the fact that they're nothing but words. And romance thrives on the reality of touch, taste, sound, etc.

I am sure you used to romance a cute NPC in the past (when your wife wasn't looking). Viconia maybe? Or Anomen? :D

Let me just say that in Fallout 2 my character was a Kama Sutra master...

But at the same time, I didn't do any of the romances in BG2...

So I have no idea what my RPG love story is.

And also Fable, let me say that you are the man/mod/god! :D

Nah... I suspect Fable was more likely Aerie's knight in shining armor... :p

*coughs* Onto the question at hand though, basically I don't mind NPC romances if they have an interesting background, well thought out dialogue, quests, and add to the overall story.
As far as what I want out of it, it depends entirely on the character in question I guess.

As I said before, it depends entirely on how the game was designed. Some games are still good even though they have little or no romance/love in it. It's not like a necessity for every RPG to have either romance or love or both in order for it to be a good game. As for the option, the reason why I didn't choose 'don't care' is because I don't mind having romances in a game. If they don't have any romance, then I'll just play the game the way it's meant to be played. If they do, I wouldn't mind at all. ;)

Back to the question. Hmm, romance with an NPC. If the romance is tacked onto a game, then I would not want to romance that NPC especially one that has little or no relevance to the plot, honestly speaking. While I don't mind romances in a game, I would rather like the romance to be part of the plot, just like Bastilla's love for Revan in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic as an example. Call me a linear-game player but this is what I would expect from romances in any game that has one.

Given Fable’s fiery temperament and tendency to violence, my money is on deliciously wicked Viconia. :D
I also suspect that he was married to Lady Grey once.

I am not a technical person but I am corrupted enough by SYM to envision a wicked squishy device (size, shape and color optional) you can install the same way you install your mouse and plug in… (optional).
The games box will have a label “Pinch-toy compatible”.

I'm not going to get away unscorched by this theme, am I?

Why stop there? Why not get an inflatable Game-Player(tm), shaped like a human (two sexes available), with all parts present and accounted for? Then mechanical, pregenerated game comments in a romance script could be felt and responded to by an air-filled object without emotions--perfect!

And you could be off enjoying some real emotions with your SO. ;)

Umm, what exactly is the point of this thread? Wasn't it set up to discuss the romance/love in an RPG?
