using the console to change major/minor skills

Post by ishuman »

I think I’ve made a very novice mistake in the major/minor skill selection for my character. My character is a warrior-type that selected both light and heavy armor and both blade and blunt as major skills. I’m not sure what I was thinking at the time but I’ve barely touched blunt and rarely use light armor too much. Now I’m 13th level, pretty far along in the story and would love to have higher skill levels in other skills like alteration, armorer or destruction.

I’ve read that I can use the console to change the major/minor skills and could even raise them back to where they should be after the game resets them to the beginning values. The instructions seem simple enough but I’ve read posts where people have reported problems raising skills after doing this.

So my questions are (1) Is this worth worrying about? And (2), if I try it in a save game does that only mess up THAT save game file or all of them?

Thanks! Sorry if this has already been covered in a different thread but I couldn’t find it.

Well I have pretty much tried out all console commands this far and changing your major and minor skills might not necessarily mess up your skills. However, which is only if you do things correctly.

¤ Open your console and type; “ showclassmenu “

¤ Do not close the console; you can change everything you want while the console is still on.

¤ What ever you do, do not click “done” when you are satisfied with your new stats. Instead hit “Esc” and “save” your game, preferably on a new slot. If you save on new slot there is no way that you could lose your old save game.

¤ Now load that saved game and your character should now have the wanted skills without the skills being all messed up. Naturally you can now continue on playing as you had been playing before.

This same trick works with the command “ showracemenu “ too.

Well that sounds promising! Does this avoid the problem I read about in some posts where the console resets all your skills to their new beginning start values without any of the progress you've made increasing them throughout the game?

Thanks,

Okay, so this worked as advertsied... but with a catch. I followed Faberge's tip of hitting ESC and saving rather than selecting "done" and that did work. It avoids the reseting of all your skills back to their new beginning of game default values but that means that the +20 bonus in your major skills stayed in the skill that is now minor (so the +20 stayed in blunt instead of moving to armorer). Oh well, can't have everything.

So in the end I decided to leave it as it was and pursue in-game ways to raise my armorer and alteration skills. I did decide to change my birthsign from thief to mage though since using the console to change that didn't seem to have any nasty side affects at all. Besides, I was getting tired of waiting around while my magicka regenerated.

Thanks again.
