First one. Do I have to kill the dragon in Underdark?
Second. A friend of mine claims that he has completed SoA by just summoning alot of monsters AND that he has done so without pausing the game once. Tell me he is lying :O

The expansion? The statment was about SoA SHadows of Amn, not ToB.
And that other part. I doubt it. One death spell or deathfog and all his monsters would be gone, and a lot of mages and dragons and liches uses deathspell whenever he/she/it sees a summon.
But he could have casted the priestspell deathward on them all, but it's not very likly. But wich class did he play with, and did he have a team?
To play the game without pausing should be doable (haven't done this myself though), but very hard if you let summons do all the work since you're really concerned about having summong them up as son as possible.
..and your friend, is he smiling guiltily when he said it? Maybe that's the best way to find out if he's lying?

I think the limit on summoning is 5 creatures. That's to say, if you have 5 summoned creatures in your party and attempt to add more, you'll find you can't.

Actually, there is a way to summon limitless creatures, yes, that goes for summoning unnlimited creatures from "epic spells".
I'll have to say that it is possible.
I've beaten SoA without resting. Did murder on my THAC0.
As everyone else has stated, killing the dragon is optional. It's much less of a hassle that way... but you'll miss out on some fun stuff.

It is a bug, one that is well known. I'm actually quite surprised that you don't know it... unless you're just keeping quiet.
Well, I was thinking about it and thought that he shouldn't know this on his first playthrough.
I can think of one bug that I know, that I will never tell anyone.
It is like the bug of all bugs... although you can effectively divide it into four bugs... although I like to think of it as one. It's the reason why the Wild Mages wear a cheese crown and sit on everyone else.

Very well, here's the unlimited summoning bug:

Long story short, when you cast the seventh level spell Simulacarum, you can have it summon without limit. Also, summoning "one time" creatures like Elemental Princes, Devas and Planetars no longer ends up in a restriction. So, you can basically have as many of the special summons as you can cast. For fighter types, there is a way to maximize this spell's efficiency, but that's a different story. Also, you CAN summon more simulacarums with a single one. Because they lose effectiveness over time, in the regarts that they're 60% as strong as the caster, they're useful for "clone spamming" with Wild Mages and fighter/thief/ranger types, assuming you can cure level drain on all of them for the latter.

Thought it was that one. Anyway, there it is, for those who want to use the bug to their advantage. Can't say I ever have, but then, I figure it means less to succeed if you need to do cheats. Your (meaning anybody's) mileage may vary, and that's okay, too.

I really didn't want to type it up.
Isn't this in the strategy section as well?
I think Mages are powerful enough... even without that.
I'm sure that many people know about this bug... I wonder why none of the patches ever adressed it.
I feel like organizing a whole community to play on Gamespy now. >.>
Well, there is a player I know, who uses a custom map, a mix between the Drow temple and the Throne of Bhaal areas and, basically, it's a duel map. There are only so many people that can host... and a significant percentage of those that can have a modded game or don't have an up to date patch. Gets lonely in there.
Anyway, back to the topic. It is possible to summon and keep out of harm's way but summoning four creatures and a Wizard Eye, or if you want to risk it, send a familiar in to observe. I'm sure that some areas gave him hell and that he didn't do all of the quests. I'm pretty sure that he had ToB installed, because fighting Adamantine Golems is annoying with your normal set of summons.
