Possible build: Battlemage/Crusader

Post by Claudius »

After starting the game and having a lot of fun I have decided to build a character who I think will have his skills more fully utilized by the game.

I first used a rogue (buduko) and that experience taught me that rogue doesn't really bring too much to the table other than ninjitsu (for the eastern class). Sure less expensive to open chests but you can just pay the points otherwise.

My other class was sorceror and I was pretty happy with the magic damage in tight spots. Also a lot of fun!

That brings us to my idea for a character the Battlemage/Crusader. I think that the character will have a blend of mage and cleric spells while maintaining a fighting presence. Kind of the DL fighter/mage/cleric.

What do other people think?

I am also interested in building a very efficient character (easy to play/build no need for hours of leveling to get its abilities), so I am welcome to ideas on this. For this goal I think rogue wouldn't be 'out' since you do need to open up chests and you don't want to level str and int for 100 hundred years against 100 xp goblins when you can get 25,000 easily 8 game hours later.

War Witch is probably more powerful, but she looks to be a major pain in teh arse to make. Let me know how it goes. Do you really need more than 2X learning bonus to Celestial? Maybe a characer which got 2X AM, 2X Celestial and the best combat bonuses would work well? Doesn't HAtamoto have two nasty diabolic skills? Might try him for a master class, Adept and MAge for low classes, Enchantress and the pre req for hatamoto. That would give you at least 2 AM, and 2 CM plus pretty nasty combat abilities. you wouldn't have bonuses, wihle getting to the pre req for hatimoto though unfortunately. I guess you are picking fighter?

Edit: Duh I am dumb, Hatamoto is fighter I guess? Thought the easterns had their own guild and didn't need to have fighter? Anyhow, I see that you get rune magics with you build which could be nice. If you can get Hatamoto without fighter, you might think about Mage, ADept, Samurai, Enchantress, Hatamoto. Not sure if the Human female is good for teh build though. Crusader looks cool with crushing blow but I am uncertain how good it is as I have never used it. okay I will shut up now ;)

hmm, maybe I won't shut up yet. ;) You know what class has always intrigued me...? Trickster. He gets bonuses to Nether Magic but what I really like is the extra bonus to thrown weapons. Alternating Frozen Shuriken and Poison Throwing Dagger on Switch would be awesome. Seems easy to build too. You would get 2X Thief skills, 2X throw and the backstab skill. You could pick Enchantress for arcane and celestial and additional thief bonuses. You could then get cabalist and either adept or mage. This would let you master nether magic easily, and have alittle arcane for nova type spells and celestial for wards. Thief skills and thrown would be easy to advance. It looks like an easy build to make and it has two diobolic skills. Probably go with Mage: Arcane so it is easily to bring novas online. So this character would go something like this...drop two novas to weaken everyone and do a back flip and summon evil. Throw Frozen Shuriken to Freeze enemies alternating with poisn dagger for big damage on teh frozen targets. Your summon evils owuld clean up on frozen targets. You could also draw a small blade and do a little close up work if you wanted. What do you think?

On the trickster: I think it sounds like a fun character and would be efficient as it incorporates learning bonus to open chests. I haven't used much nether magic as I am always reluctant to burn ingredients...i usually end up with millions of spider eggs, wolf pelts, bat wins, etc, but then the recipe for a good spell has a rare monster part in it too. Maybe I needed to shop around. I only ever got backstab to work on frozen weapon so I think some of the rogue type chars punch is wasted.

Your description of his battle tactic do sound intriguing however I will point out what the character has given up to be a cabalist sorc or battlemage. He has given up more powerful learning bonuses to weapons/armor and more spell power. Consider the wizard/knight, battlemage/crusader or paladin/warlock (or wizard) who have some more raw power.

Also my current theory is to build str early and bash chests so as not to go down the thief skill tree.

Okay, building Str early is expensive though. What race are you picking? If you are looking for a character who plays fast, not using the heavier armours and heavier wepaons may be your best bet as they require triple or double investment. Light armor, light weapon, and thrown require little investment. That is why i suggested something of the sort with this build. A fast characerw ould be rather limited, overlapping as many learning bonuses as possible. That is why I sugested the rogue path.

Yeah I see what you mean now. You have to make some sacrifices in potential power in order to become good fast.

ps this game is making me nuts

Well I settled on my dream char as a War witch (enchantress, adept) plus Battlemage. Now I am doing good but I got myself in a jam. Elvithra is out of business temporarilly untill she gets junior back and Fargrove is closed so my potion purchase power is way down.

I tried storming the Fathien keep but with this char its hard to kill and the second dude with duel wield katanas is kicking my ass. Its funny last time I had no problem and I even have a better weapon this time (elven blood sword).

My stats are all the mins for a war witch and also 75 intelligence. I also have the prereqs for battlemage/enchantress in skills and the nonweapon/armor skills for war witch (waiting for battlemage learning bonus).

I don't have as many pots and not as much magic (only 4 magic missile 2 fireball 4 freeze weapon). I guess thats the problem???

ps hopefully I will suceed in killing the villain but it is very very hard. Maybe I should have kept my other character. That guy was rolling even though maybe not the ultimate.

Try not pursuing the main quest this fast. you can do allot of stuff before ever getting fargrove closed. You could also stock up before elvirtha closes. As for killing with low spell power, try buying scrolls. You can get high levels spells cheap. Sure you only get one pop with them, but you can get far more cast out of twenty scrolls than four books for a key battle. My guess is omething like frost nova if you have access will trash the katana guy. It will do allot of damage and freeze allowing you to get in a few strikes before casting another frost nova. Best of luck. You picked the hardest character to make. ;) I here that getting warwitch itself is like impossible without the gasmask.

If you get tired of your warwitch and are looking for something fast and powerful, I came up with the following build. I plan on trying it out once i finish my wizard.

Fighter, Rogue, Samurai, Trickster, Cabalist

It has many overlapping learning bonuses. The character would use medium armor and duelwield kama of the void. He could use thrown weapons to suppliment his attacks. You would have a bonus to merchantile making it easier to get ingredients for nether spells. It is the only magic he has, but he is suitably good at it.

He has the folloiwng restrcited skills:
Inflict Wounds
Light Duel Wield
Alchemy
Backstab
Magic Weaponry
Drain Life

Shugenja/Kenjasia looked good but you have to develop Ninjitsu which sucks. I have taken more of a liking to Nether magic lately. The summons are very effective once you get the ingredients together.

A healthy supply of Frost Nova scrolls would be nice. ;)

I had to restart my char because battlemage doesn't give heavy weapons ack! But I now have a fighter/adept/enchanter/paladin and I am going to get the war witch class next. So lots of magic and still good armor skills and fair weapons skills.

I haven't played the game through but I think the ninjitsu is decent. I played a budoka/sorceror and he was doing more damage with ninjitsu (level 10) because he could hit so many times so fast. Also the jump kick is so much better than jumping weapons attack. Finally the delay at the end of combos is shorter relative to weapons. I think a kusenja would be decent. Maybe with trickster for nether magic synergy. I think the question on ninjitsu is does the extra level after 10 raise the damage or combos or speed any more to be worth a good late game attack. And also it gets pretty expensive to buy more ninjitsu!!!

Char & area access

Try Adept, Mage, Sorcerer, Valkyrie, WarWitch. (also choose the cataclysm spell rather than steel in the quest for Vartug's eye).

All areas of the game are accessible at any time by traveling over the mountains. (exceptions: Fargrove has to be entered through the sewers the first time, and the area of the endgame).

to build up your character at the beginning, pick an elven bow in the first treasure chest, get to L5, go over the mountains, make a stand at the temple of light to build up your character and get better weapons.
Fargrove is not yet accessible, but Arindale is (tough trek, but doable).
You could even go and kill a dragon (from a distance) and really build up your points at this early stage of the game.
You then have to make it back over the mountains to the original area to access Fargrove via the sewers.

Once Fargrove has been opened (davenmor's orders) get a moonstone, go over the mountains to activate the moongates (even Fargrove's moongate can be activated: you can gain access via the western gate).

N.B. I have found two points of egress from the labyrinth area (--- there might be more: the weapons and equipment to be found there make it worthwhile)

how do you go over the mountains? My character can't climb those. Is there a fly spell or something?

mountain access

You have to find a spot that can be climbed.
Climbing involves zig-zaging up in the easier areas, backflipping in the more difficult areas. (The easiest area to climb is probably the mountain just north of the 'northern steppes' moongates, you can go almost straight up --- the most difficult climb I have found so far is out of the black swamp)
