Just starting
I want to learn how to play and everything. What do I need to get started to become a DnD player? Books, items, etc.
New, coming to a board game near you. Quest to Wizards Mountain. Kid 1: Yes, I attack you with my lightning bolt spell! Kid 2: I have the invisiblity cloak. You can't see me! Kid 1: I have invisiblity cloak seeing glasses dumbass!
The Hypertext d20 SRD (v3.5 d20 System Reference Document) :: d20srd.org Is a good source to browse through it to see if it seems like it is something you would be interested in. To be brutally honest, ever since Wizards of the Coast took over, it has become far too costly to get all the books you'd want to be able to do what you want to in the game. However, a brief rundown in the "essentials" are this:
Players Handbook (Necessary for players)
Dungeons Masters Guide and Monster Manual (Necessary for DM's)
Dice. A good mix of dice that you will want: 1 D4 die, 3 D6 die, 1 D8 die, 1 D10 die, 1 D12 die, at least 1 D20 die. If you have a number of players in the group, I'd highly suggest getting at least one D20 die for each player and for the DM. It is the most often used die in the game.
If you get through the stages of having used that stuff for a while and want to move on, there are a large number of books that you can look into for just about anything. However, I believe if you get all of that, it will run you roughly $100-$120, so it won't be cheap for you to do that. The books run I believe $29.99 American or something like that nowadays? So figure $33 a book with tax x3 and $5-$15 for dice.

"You can do whatever you want to me."
"Oh, so I can crate you and hide you in the warehouse at the end of Raiders?"
"So funny, kiss me funny boy!" / *Sprays mace* " I know, I know, bad for the ozone"
