Characters are only knocked unconscious. As long as somebody in your party survives, then at the end of the battle everybody will wake up, and you'll be able to continue on.

Me: "It's a great way to get promoted, I know that much."

Yes, and you're offered an opportunity to load a saved game.

Spoiler
According to the manual, your character/companions fall unconscious but that doesn't seem true. Neeshka, one of the companions you meet along the way died during my raid on the bandit camp and she was dead as a door nail even after the battle was done. I got a big gray skull icon in place of her portrait. I wonder if this is a bug.

Darkpark, I didn't need to know that, and I really, really wish you hadn't told me. Do not put things like that in a thread without a SPOILER designation at the head of it, and stick it in black on black using (SPOILER) (/SPOILER), where brackets substitute for parens.

Just like the sticky thread about spoilers says, at the head of the forum.

I thought the icon was of a ghost, but I guess it could be a skeleton. Anyway, that's how it's supposed to work. The character "dies" but then after the battle she should wake up and have 1 hit point. She won't wake up if enemies are near, and it might take her a minute or two to wake up.

If for some reason she's staying "dead" for you, it could be a bug. You might try leaving the area and see if that forces her to wake up.
