No combat on horseback. That was ruled out fairly early in game design.

A better horse will go faster, but you can't vary the speed on any given horse.

Horses run or walk. That's it. And they are not easy to manoeuvre, either. Best use of horses is to mount your animal, make sure you are in run mode, then fast travel to where you are going. You get there faster than you would if you fast travel on foot. Prior Maborel's horse is one of the slower breeds. I think black are the fastest.

About the other animal you mentioned: yes there is. Just one. It is a quest object and you are supposed to kill it for the horn. But if it sees a weapon in your hand it will attack you - and it is quite a tough cookie! It is also surrounded by protectors who attack you on sight, and which have to be killed. So, if you want the unicorn, you have to lure the protectors away out of sight of the unicorn to kill them. Then approach the unicorn with no weapons AT ALL in hand. Mount as you do other horses. Bear in mind, though, that it doesn't tolerate YOU using a weapon. I have never done this, myself, but I have wondered - considering what a good fighter it is - if it will attack those who attack you...

be very careful with the unicorn - you could get the unicorn and use it to kill the whole town. it sees one guard with a weapon and then that guards calls more guards and then the townpeople come to help...:speech: ...ghosttown. i've seen it happen.

Unicorn

**Possible Spoiler** Of what I have seen, no you cannot use the Unicorn for attack, the guards of the Unicorn are 3 Mitotaurs with warhammers.

Does anybody know what quest requires the Unicorn horn and where I can access this quest?

But the guards are not hard to kill, especially if you lure them away and kill them one by one.

I have not ridden the critter, either, but I have seen post by people who HAVE.

I've forgotten where it is, sorry. As for the Quest - never done it, but I THINK it is one of the Daedric Quests...?

If you do a Search of this forum, with the word Unicorn as your Search objective, you should bring up a fair few posts about it.

I have ridden with that unicorn and it was kind of cool to do so. But the fact of not being able to use your weapons near it is a real bummer. However the unicorn doesn't mind spells, as long as you don't hit it with your spells. So if you are a mage throwing fireballs unicorn would be your ideal horse and companion when travelling outdoors.

The easiest way to find the shire is travel north from Bravil, keeping your distance between the coast and you as about 1,0-1,5 cm. Eventually you should see a statue in your compass, go there and now you should also see an icon with a mountain on it. That is the place where the Unicorn awaits.

And yes, the unicorn horn is needed to complete the Hircine’s Daedric quest. If you are on PC you might not need to kill the unicorn to get that horn.

There are console commands and construction set. But I haven’t tried these things yet, so it is pretty much just speculation at the moment.

Here is a map of the Daedric shrines too. But it is considered as a spoiler and you might not want to see it unless you really cant find that shrine.
