Any reason to level?

Post by Zak211 »

Hey guys,
My first character in Oblivion was a bow/sword/stealth character. I leveled him to around 10ish before I realized "Wow, every monster kicks my @$$". I didnt know what I was doing with point distribution and what not, so i was spreading my points over 5-6 stats, and was weak all around.
After I noticed this mistake, and realized that you dont necessarily get stronger with levels, I re-made my character (And spent about 2 furious hours trying to make the same face but it was impossible :o ) . First thing I did was join the dark brotherhood for that first armor set, joined the theives guild, then worked stealth to 100, archery to 70, alchemy to 70, ect. I just finished the theives guild quests last night, and my character is still level 3. Is there any real reason to level up? I know you get higher level items the higher your character is, but from what Ive heard the itemization has been dissapointing. Also, from reading other posts, seems that bow characters get weaker the higher level you go.

Any thoughts?

First off, if you're on the PC, there are utilities that let you import/export faces. So if you want to start a new character with the same face, you don't have to try to remember exactly where you set all those sliders.

Secondly, I think there was already a thread that discussed the benefits & drawbacks of leveling up; you should try searching the forum since there were some interesting points raised on both sides.

Finally, I'm gonna answer anyway because I find this a very interesting topic. I ran 3 characters with major skills they used frequently, all ended up around 30th to 40th level by the time I finished TG, MG, FG & MQ. I'm running a character now with major skills I almost never use, finished TG, MG, FG & MQ and still only 3rd level (and I would still be 2nd level except along the way I accidentally read a skill book I didn't realize would advance one of my majors).

Most creatures, NPCs and loot level with you, so doing the same mission at 40th level and 2nd level is almost like two different games. Sure, the weapons & gear you find are nowhere near as powerful at low level, but neither are the things you fight, so it more or less evens out. In fact the game seems most difficult to me at the middle levels, because at level 40+ you keep getting stronger while most monsters are maxed out.

The only absolute reason I can think of to level up is that most of the daedric quests require you to be a certain level before you can start the mission.
Can the answer to this question be "No"?

The thing is, most of my major skills are things I use lol. Blade, Alchemy, Illlusion, LIght Armor, Marksman, Security, and Sneak. Just as a test I leveled as much as it would allow me to, and I was 29 with maxed Agi and Speed, 85ish Intelligence and 65ish endurance. Would I get slaughtered if I actually stayed at 29?

marksman is one of my major skill and i have no problem whatso ever killing any enemy wiht just three to five shoots, if not 2( like a clanfear) im level seventten annd , although i do have arrows of savage frost, im confisidant my bow skills could tkae me anywhere, adn thats eactly how i became grand champion in the arena. im gonna have to disagree wioth the bow statment,. but i play for the xbox, if theres a difference.

anyway, i think you were hjust spreading your poiint too thin

marksman is my favorite skill as well.
a good sneak attack and a couple extra shots should take enything that comes your way out unless it is something incredibly powerfull.
use invisible and chameleon along with your marksman skill.

dawn chameleon, fire of a sneak attack, keep firing till enemy about reaches you, if your chameleon is not strong enough to conceal you then use invisibility, run back around and get a good angle on it, take another sneak attack and repeat until it is dead.

it has never failed me :)
EDIT:also poisoning your arrow and taking simply one shot and letting it get damaged as you dawn invisibility and watch it lose health from poison is effective as well. they take more shots to add additional damage.
not leveling takes fun out of the game as well. do you really want to be fighting scamps till the end of the main quest?
Why am I fighting to live, if I'm just living to fight? Why am I trying to see, when there aint nothing in sight? Why am I trying to give, when no one gives me a try? Why am I dying to live, if I'm just living to die?
