I played the game twice before when it just came out: once as a fighter, once as a mage. (don't like thief)
I got bored lately and decided to play it again, this time EVUULLLLL.
Can't decide what to play, a pure fighter, pure mage or fighter7/mage...
any tips?
Hybrid or not?
When you switch classes from a Fighter to a Mage, you retain some of the benefits of being a Fighter, including THAC0, hit points, and proficiency points. As long as you're willing to put forth the time and effort to earn a bunch of Fighter levels, a Fighter/Mage is probably the most effective class.
Depending on which class you happen to be at the time, you get a special bonus at 7th Level, and if you're the same class when you reach 12th level, you get another bonus. My own preference is to reach 12th level as a Fighter so I can get the two Fighter bonuses and maximum hit points, but other people prefer the Mage bonuses. I give the Fighter tattoos to other party members (Annah and Dak'kon) to improve their fighting skills.
There are two places in the game where you can get an endless amount of experience because the monsters respawn forever: the sewers in the Clerk's Ward and the dungeons created by the Modron Cube. You can make a 60th level character if you want to (although there isn't really any point besides power for the sake of power and bragging rights). You have to leave Sigil in the middle of the game, and when you return to Sigil, there's a new monster in the sewers who sometimes drops special items. These include a nice item for Fall-From-Grace and an item called the Aegis of Torment. I like to get an Aegis of Torment for each of my party members. You have to kill a lot of monsters to get that many since they appear randomly. The Aegis of Torment is especially beneficial for Nordom if he has gotten all of his upgrades. Equipped with the Lens of Seeing Double (which you can find inside the Modron Cube if you look long enough), Nordom is a killing machine.

Those wonderful looking axes alone make it nearly irresistable to play TNO as a fighter. However, go to Youtube, type in: palnescape: torment & have a gander at the various spells footage to see the wonder & joy of playing him as a mage, eg YouTube - Planescape Torment Deathbolt spell
