Making money is easy: All you need is to get a mortar and pestle ASAP. You don't even need to choose Alchemy as a major skill. It will go up really fast. Just pick up ingredients when ever you can and make potions. Sell them at shops. Buy all the ingredients at same shop. Make more potions. Sell them. Do this until rich.

Edit: By the way IMO there's a few skills that you need never choose as major: Security: Once you get the hang of it you need never break a pick; Alchemy: Will as already said go up really fast with use; Speechcraft: Spend a little time working on it until you get to apprentice. You'll never really need more; I've heard Conjuration will go up really fast too, but haven't tested it thoroughly.

Class: Always make your own custom class. That way you won't get any major skills you don't want.

Unless you really want to be a Tank, use Light Armour. But you don't need either Armour skill as a Major - they go up fast!

Sneak is a VERY valuable skill. I always have it as a Major, and use it a LOT.

Don't have Illusion as a Major Skill. Just buy any illumination spell and cast it in dungeons instead of using torches and Illusion will go up rapidly, even in minor skills. But remember Illusion is another VERY valuable skill - you can get Chameleon and Invisibility at higher levels. :D

Alteration is good Major, as is Restoration; Armorer is also good as a Major, since you will do a lot of repairing, and will improve your Endurance stat as well as you gain levels in it.
Take a weapon skill, too. Any weapon. And maybe Destruction. It can be handy.

And don't forget to pick up all those mage staffs that are dropped by various enemies as you progress through the game: they can be excellent. and those that are not much good will still net you a decent amount of cash when you sell them.

Personally, I am always a mage. Having several characters right now I can esailly compare them. My Fighter is right now the hardest to kill healthwise. My mage is too, but thats because by the time you move to attack him you are already nice and roasted. If you enjoy being able to mindless run through a dungeon with no worries, then go with a fighter. If you a prefer a far more difficult, far more fun approach (again in my humble oppinion) then assassin/theif is the way to go. Or if you like the feeling of godlike powers as you assault your enemies. then Go with a Mage. (I am a little biased. Once you know what class you are more apt to play, then you can chose your skills.

How the hell can anyone tell you what class to be? WE don't know your preferences, how you like to play!
What if we gave you all the guff for a Magic char, but you prefer Warrior? Or if we gave you ideas for a Warrior type and you prefer Stealth types?

Yeah, sure, we could tell you all the details you want for a char that would suit each of us individually - but it probably wouldn't suit you.

Play around. Create characters, let 'em go through the beginning dungeon and maybe a bit outside as well, see if you like the build. Then do the same with another build, and another, and another. Then you will have some idea of the sort of class and character build you like playing.

*sigh!* :p

Ok, ok, already! :p

Skills: Well, I personally wouldn't have an armour skill in Major skills. The others are fine. But, if you are going with a Wood Elf (I like Wood Elves ;) ) I would take out Destruction & Light Armour from the Major skills and replace with Marksman and Alteration: Wood Elves have a natural ability with Marksman (+10) and with Sneak (+10), Alchemy (+10). (Also +5 with Alteration, Acrobatics and Light Armour).

Favoured Attributes: Wood Elves are not very Strong, so I would be inclined, myself, to go with Strength rather than Intelligence, but Willpower is a good choice - it will add to magic resistance and slightly improve the rate of Magica recovery.

Sign: If you are new to Oblivion, I would NOT go with Atronach! Yes, you get lots of Magica and also 50% spell absorption, both of which are good! However, you DO NOT REGENERATE MAGICA, not even when you sleep. You have to take potions all the time to restore it, and/or depend on people casting offensive spells at you, which you absorb half the power of, restoring your magica, and also on certain stones you can find. If you want to have a Magic char, Mage sign might be better - but you are the one to decide that.

Me - using a Wood Elf - I would opt for The Thief sign.
If I wanted a Mage, I would opt for Breton and The Apprentice. (Tricksy sign, but Bretons are best for it).

Morals: yeah, I go for the non-killing of anything but enemies, too. As for stealing stuff - sounds to me like you SHOULD be a Stealth char, not a Mage!

Goals: Yeah. Join Mage Guild first and rush through the Recommendation Quests without stopping for anything else - you can do the individual city Miscellaneous quests available later. SPOILER: highlight to read
Spoiler
If I might make a suggestion about the Mage Staff, take Electrical Damage. And make sure you are level 10+ before you get the staff, since the higher your level, the higher the staff's power. OH! And remember you have to PAY to have magic items' power restored - or find some nice special stones caged in Ayleid ruins!
;)

And yeah, if you don't want to kill without good cause, DON'T join the Dark Brotherhood. Mage, Thieves, Fighters are fine. You can join other minor groups as well, but they are only little Misc Quests.

Goals:
1. Join all guilds (espescially DB)
2. pillage every pillageable house
3. Go through every cave/ruins or anything of that sort.
4. buy an extrememly big house and decorate it for fun
(i found that extremely entertaining. i decorate everything with weapons, armor and whatever i find that i don't sell.
4. do all deardric quests
5. finish main quest.
Why am I fighting to live, if I'm just living to fight? Why am I trying to see, when there aint nothing in sight? Why am I trying to give, when no one gives me a try? Why am I dying to live, if I'm just living to die?

A minor correction of preference to Fljotsdale's spoiler:
Personally, I would finish the Mage’s staff only after gaining the fifteenth level, because then the staff will do 80 points of damage if you have chosen any of the three destruction effects. If you finish your staff on levels 10-14 it will do 60 points of damage, on levels 5-9 it will do 40 points and levels 1-4 it will do 20 points of damage. The possible staffs you can get do not improve after the fifteenth level.

Other powerful staffs would be Staff of Indarys (Leveled item, playing through the main quest may lead you to receive this staff. But I’d prefer doing so after the 25 level.) and Apotheosis which can be bought from Imperial City.

I actually agree, Faberge. :) I intended to indicate not to do it BEFORE level 10. Later is definitely better!

My current character Is a High Elf Battle Mage, I picked The Mage as my Birthsign because I Rely heavily on Magica with my character. All my major attributes are maxed out and are listed below Its easy to max out as a mage and quickly become damn near invincible. you need to concentrate on leveling up the correct skills to compliment your attributes.

Combat Arts - Concentrate on leveling up Strength, Endurance and Speed

Strength - affects Blade, Blunt, Hand to Hand

Endurance - affects Armorer, Block, Heavy Armor

Speed - affects Athletics

Magical Arts - Concentrate on leveling up Willpower, Intelligence, Personality

Willpower - affects Alteration, Destruction, Restoration

Intelligence - affects Alchemy, Conjuration, Mysticism

Personality - affects Illusion

Stealth Arts - Concentrate on leveling up Agility, Acrobatics, Mercantile

Agility - affects Security, Sneak, Marksman

Speed - affects Acrobatics, Light Armor

Personality - affects Mercantile, Speechcraft

Blade/100
Heavy Armour/100
Destruction/100
Conjuration/100
Illusion/100
Mysicism/100
Alteration/100
Agility/100

With my major skills maxed out Im not bothered too much about minor skills although they cant be overlooked. I'd say the most valuable skill to posess is Illusion. Chameleon is priceless. When your level is high enough enchant 2 rings an amulet a hood and a cloak with This spell and you are literally invincible. They cant attack what they cant see:laugh:

a easy way to get money is by going to the taloz plaza district in the imperial city and go to a house owned by a man named dorian, go into his house at nigth time, he will tell you to get out (he has to do this or it wont work) punch him and then bribe him to at least 500 gold, after you do kill him take the money the money will not go away and you can get as much as you want.(take lot fast because the gaurds take away his body after a while. :D
