Warrior Woes

Post by Pellinore »

I have precognitive powers and can forsee that Jaheira may have an "accident" in the near future. I need to pick up another warrior as I only have Khalid and Jaheira and don't want Jaheira. My party is this:

Me (Bard)
Imoen (may leave her as thief, may not)
Branwen
Xan (thought I would try him again)
Khailid (want to make him my main archer)
Jaheira (kinda falls through the cracks in this party)

I am thinking about Shar-Teel. Does she complain much when your rep gets high? Also, can someone remind me of where she is located?

IIRC Shar-teel is on the map with all the basilisks, north of the Nashkel carnival. One of those maps anyway.

You can also take Minsc, Ajantis or Kivan. There is a decent dwarf Kagain in Beregost too that not many people make use of.

I have used Kagain before. He is funny but I was wanting a sword swinger-somebody I can put **** in large swords. Ajantis would be a better fit but maybe not as effective a warrior.   ...basilisks.

Other than Khalid and Kagain, then Shar-Teel is the only option that you have available. You may need to use GateKeeper in order to modify her proficiencies.

Basilisks can be made a lot easier if your tank is wearing Boots of Speed and has Potions of Mirrored Eyes and Protection from Petrification spells before they go into battle. Have the rest of your party hit with ranged weapons.

It also helps to befriend a particular ghoul on this map as well. ;)

OK so how much does she nag about high rep? Any more or less than the other evil characters?

All of the evil NPCs will be "Unhappy" if your Reputation is 13-15 and "Angry" if it's 16-18, and they will leave the party if it reaches 19. If you're playing a Good party, you need good or neutral NPCs.

I suggest that you make Khalid your "tank" since he has the most proficiency points. You can equip him with the Gauntlets of Ogre Power or cast a couple of Stength spells on him or have him drink potions of Strength. You can recruit Coran and use him as an archer. His thieving skills can supplement Imoen's--give her 100 points in Open Locks and give him 100 points in Find Traps. It's the best option you have, and it's practically perfect.

This group is toast:laugh: I reloaded more times on the Iron Throne fight than I did the whole last run-through. I am scrapping this group and have started a new one....

New (and better) Group

So, I decided to be evil this time so I can go to "other" route in SoA. Still having confusion over the party. Here goes:

PC: Gnome thief/illusionist named Mytzylplyk
Kagain
Shar-Teel
Edwin
Garrick (I have him because he is funny with Kagain and doesn't complain)
Viconia

I may end up ditching Garrick for somebody else after I get Algernon's cloak (my pc thief hasn't spent ANY points on pick pockets) but I don't know who for. First...How important is Pick Pockets? I have enough spell power so should I go with another Tank? Maybe another Cleric? I feel that aside from PP and Lore Garrick may be dead weight...but I like him. Any thoughts from the pros?

I don't think you need another tank. I also think Imoen would be better than Garrick if you dualed her to a Conjurer when she reached 5th Level.

You can also use meta-gaming strategies to maximize your party's experience. For example, don't pick up Viconia until your main character is 6th level so that she will be 6th level. The last time I played the game, I had two custom characters. My two main characters and Imoen did practically all of the sidequests before they went to the Nashkel mines, and then I picked up Viconia and Coran who were at maximum experience.

i'm more into role playing and enjoying the characters than I am into maximising. Imoen grates on my nerves in BGI (not-so-much in BGII) and I wanted characters I had never used before. I like Garrick but I am concerned that he may be useless with Edwin and myself.

Don't underestimate Garrick. The bard song doesn't kill anyone but is still powerful. +1 to hit, damage and saves on the whole party equals +5 to hit, +5 to damage and +6 saving throws onto one character. Much damage added without using up ammo.
He'll level up faster than your mages, so he can cast longer lasting haste and other important buffs.

I'd consider making the protagonist neutral so Edwin can have the "robe of the evil archmagi".

Role-playing in a CRPG... YES sir!

If you like Garrick, I'd say go with it. Endevour to make him useful. It may add some flavor to your game.

Maybe Garrick's spot is your chance to rotate other dudes in, whom you've never used before, like Eldoth or one of the gnome NPCs. Character Number Six will be a little behind in XP, but it sounds like that spot will be used in more of a supporting role anyways, so who cares.
Why is it that whenever I finally get around to playing a new game for the first time,
I feel like playing Baldur's Gate for the second time...

Kaigan is plenty of Tank in BGI especially since baddies rarely stray from attacking the first party member they see. Don't forget to give him the gauntlets of dex.
:) Once again time to give someone the boot to make room for Coran. LOL :)

Kagain is the perfect fighter. If you also cast "strength" twice onto him he has 18/00 strength, 18 dex and 20 con. With **** in axes, axe+2 and throwing axe +2 later he can become really impressive.

I'd keep Garrick until the cloakwood mines are completed, on the way back exchange him for Eldoth whom I'd only keep until the blackmailing is complete. Afterwards get Tiax, it's always good to have the future ruler of the world in your party. :D

What?!?!?!?

I don't understand your 1st paragraph (where do you get a +5 to hit and damage? If it's from adding, you're in for a big surprise... I'll take a +5 sword any day over five +1 swords!).

Bards can't wear robes anyway.

Its a tough decision....thinking of dumping Edwin but who for I have no clue. I will have LOTS of spell power with the current line up and I will be playing characters I have never played before but maybe this much spell power will make the game too easy AND (if I remember correctly) I had trouble enough with the last run-through trying to find enough 4th-5th level spells for two mages, let alone three.

If you have three characters that can all cast high spell levels than you should have no problems at all with Kaigen out front. If you want an evil Bard don't forget about Eldoth. ( he will want you to rescue Skie even though after they travel together a little while he seems to regret it.LOL)
