Is it possible to play this game without a thief? The class seems so useless except for traps and doors yet they seem to be essential, if only for this alone.
I know you can disable traps etc in options, but that seems too much of a cheat to be acceptable.

No problem.
Traps can survived and locks can be opened with a knock spell.

I`ll try that. I seem to remember it didn`t work properly on an earlier game.

I`m supposed to pickpocket someone in the Sea Bounty. Any ideas?

There are other ways to achieve this, like threatening or having a beautifukl party member confuse him. (requires high eough cha) IIRC.
If you want to pickpocket someone then you can have Jan join just for doing this and dismiss him afterwards.
