Starting NPC level or XP (SoA)

Starting NPC level or XP (SoA)?

I tried to search this in the forum and all over the web but couldn't find it.

Does anyone know what level/XP each NPC starts with? Kheldorn and Haer Dalis in particular?

I figure I'll stay a party of four until I get enough XP to max out their (khel and Haer) starting level. I have definately noticed they have a higher level if you pick them up later xpwise.

Your observation is correct (as far as I know) what it peaks at or if it peaks I don't know. It sounds like something that might be able to be found out in shadowkeeper. Anybody know? - Curdis !

I would like to look into this. Why do you suggest that Shadowkeeper can tell me this? I ask because afik SK is used to change the characters around: attributes, equip, etc. Is there another part for NPCs?

Or did you mean I can spot an NPC whatever XP I want with SK? I hesitate to do that as part of the fun is choosing your battles and gradually building building building...

More likely he meant that the information you are asking may be found by using SK. You don't actually have to change anything, just look the stats showed there...

If you are going to find it by playing the game, it would take much longer as you would have to hunt down every NPC...

Haer'Dalis can start at 3 different levels with the following proficiencies:
Profs: Lvl 10 - [*] Dagger, Dart
[**] Short Sword, Two Weapon Style

Lvl 13 - [*] Dagger, Dart, Longsword
[**] Short Sword, Two Weapon Style

Lvl 15 - [*] Dagger, Dart
[**] Longsword, Short Sword, Two Weapon Style
Keldorn can also start at 3 levels with the following proficiencies:
Profs: Lvl 8 - [**] Crossbow, Longsword, Two Handed Sword

Lvl 9 - [*] Bastard Sword
[**] Crossbow, Longsword, Two Handed Sword

Lvl 12 - [**] Bastard Sword, Crossbow, Longsword, Two Handed Sword
Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocre minds. The latter cannot understand it when a person does not thoughtlessly submit to hereditary prejudices but honestly and courageously uses their intelligence.

Muchos Gracias!! :)

I think I'll swing by and see what level they are in my game current. I'm definately gonna need SK to fix poor Kheldorns proficiencies (and maybe Haer Dalis)

Just for the record I can't recommend the tactic of leveling up as a duo or trio then tacking on other party members at high level... heres why.

I started with Jaheira as a duo and earned good xp.

Then I picked up Jan with about maybe 800000 xp while my pc at 820000 so far so good.

Then I picked up Valygar with my pc at maybe 1050000 (pc sorc 12)? and Valygar was at level 11 and 800000? so not so good

Then I picked up Kheldorn (sorc 13). Again at 800000 xp and 10th level...not good.

Then I picked up Haer Dalis at level 11 and 400000 xp BAD!!!!

I did a lot of quests but not all ch 2/3 by far (not unseeing eye, planar sphere, prison thing, windspear). So it didn't work as I expected. I think you'd have to go to underdark to get them at high level but then you'd be WAAY above them. This way the difference will even out with time yet it is still a blow to my strategy. Good news is I leveled the multiclasses a little up and leveled the sorceror to two 6th level spells..YES!

I found that Hds blade levels were more influential than many other differences down to joining level - I accidentally left him late last time and when he joined - WOW! instead of some jerk who got himself killed all the time, I had a competent mage/fighter added to the party - I didn't notice how good his casting was at first, because I had forgotten about it - when I checked I found he had a whole armoury of useful spells and became an useful member of the team rather than a hanger-on for his quest.
although it means doing without the boots of speed for a while, leaving Hds for a while is worth it.
just remember to have space in your party when you visit that area or things may get awkward.

I try to keep unused NPCs in one place, so I have lined them up in Cern's old house which has lots of storage space for spare gear - what I do is strip them of most of their kit - stand them at the right hand side of the room and stand next to them when I dismiss them from the party - that way I have them usefully arrayed to re-selection if need be. I have Minsc, Edwin and Aerie there at present, I think. Nalia and Yoshimo I send to the Copper Coronet if need be and I try to avoid Valgyar going to his cabin.

As a mage, the sphere is the handiest place for keeping retainers - I use the map room when I have that as a stronghold. I have left some gear at the Keep, but dropping Nalia while I do some other quests, her father's funeral hasn't been triggered. I haven't even triggered the Jaheira curse quest yet, so I'm taking my time picking and choosing how to pace things.

**slight spoiler**
with the Harpers quest which loses her services for a while, I find it an idea to do the druid's grove quest first and other quests where her particular skills are useful - eg ones where insect plague can disable multiple opponents who otherwise would make life difficult. waking up and finding her gone can be a pain - especially if that loses the PC too many items or lumbers the PC with quest items she is carrying.

Sounds like some interesting methods. I don't bother picking up NPCs if I'm not going to keep them permanently, however. I don't want to wait too long for HD to level up (before I pick him up). My sorceror is already 13th level and when I picked him up (HD) he was only Blade 11 (sucks!). Oh well... When I do the rest of the Amn quests and the underdark he should get pretty powerful, but I'm waiting no longer.

there are some quests which can be done easier than others as a duo - if you decide which your PC can do pretty much solo and then add HD, you are only splitting the XP two ways. some quests offer per person xp whereas others have a lump distributed between the party. reaching 'end of chapter' may well be per person, so it is a shame to do that without all your NPCs on board at that point.
pick quests with verbal elements as opposed to fights - the Helm quest of hiring Sir Sarles for example only has the fight with Neb and his spirits - but (spoiler) do the Bodhi quest to get the MoD before finishing it - so it is easy to get the alloy. never waste the real stuff on Sarles, take it to Cromwell instead - you know it makes sense!

you can always turn party AI off and have HD invisible, if you don't want to risk him in a fight.
