Easy build for beginners?

Post by Sinbios »

Im new to this game and I want to build an easy character, I guess a melee character would be the most suitable one. Should I go for a barbarian or a fighter? Do you guys hv any recommended build for a melee character (the only thing i want to choose is to be a human  ) including how to invest points into abilites, skills and feats?

Thanks for any help :)

Well in nwn1 I found the best and simplest build to be a human fighter/weapon master that focuses on a weapon with a high crit threat range. I've not played nwn2 as much as the first game yet obviously, but I'd still say this is a great way to start. I know my next char is going to be a falchion weapon master just because the waking dragon looks so amazing (keen+massive crits).

If you choose this build make sure you have intell 13+ so you can get whirlwind attack.

and also, scythes are great for weapon masters because of the huge multiplier.

IMO doesn't really matter. The game can be done pretty easily with all the classes. I recommend a sorcerer for the sheer fun of it. You'll have a harder time the first few levels, but when you get fireball, you can pretty much nuke anything without worry.
But all this ise beside the point I guess, since you want a melee char. I tryed a fighter, wasn't that much fun. Rerolled when I reached Newerwinter. Barbarian was more fun, I guess.
When you compare a game to Oblivion, God kills a kitten.

Sure a strait Human Fighter would be the easiest to learn with, fairly simple and strait forward, Strength being the most important Attribute.
I could try to offer a suggestion;
Str 16
Dex 12
Con 14
Int 12
Wis 12
Cha 12

Basicly what this does is give you a little boost in each area like Saving throw, Skill points and Diplomacy checks.
You could put your new Attribute points you get every 4 level in Strength which is safest, gives better chance to hit and damage.
If you want to talk your way out of things then you need more Charisma or bumping up your Diplomacy skill.
I guess this doesn't answer all your questions but at least a little idea of what and why. :)
Trust me, most of the names I have been called you can't translate in any language...they're not even real words as much as a succession of violent images.

What feats do you recommend?

Thanks for this thread.
I have always been a fan of fighter/WM builds. In NWN1, I have 3 different variants of them.

But with NWN2, a few of the feats and rules have changed. Also, without the expansion, with the cap of level 20, I have to rethink.

I read through the character build guide on gamefaqs for powerbuilds. I suggest you do the same.
However, in many of the threads in forums, I did not see a recommendation for feats for a fighter.

In NWN2, I am planning for a 12fighter/7WM/1Rog. But the problem with going WM is the steep feat requirements (though all are useful). Personally, I prefer to go dualwield. But with lvl cap, I will not be able to fully exploit dualwield and criticals as I did in NWN1.

Also, I prefer greatcleave to whirlwind. But then again, it's hard to take great cleave when I have to take powerattack and cleave just to reach it.

So, assuming that I take all the feats required for criticals for the WM build (including power critical) and the weapon specialisation and the weapon focus, I would have only left 2 to 3 feats spare.

If I were to stick to this route, I could take blind-fight (for the just in case), or monkey grip (wielding a great sword at the moment) or improved initiative or just take the iron will/lightning reflex/great fortitude.

Which feats would you recommend?

The gamefaqs character build actually discourages against taking 12 levels of fighter. But for me, I find that if I want to do criticals, the greater weapon specialisation feat is a must have.
In the end, everything will be alright. If it is not alright, it is not the end.

if you have 2 feats left i recommend taking blind fight and monkey grip (in case you are being beat down badly, pop that tower shield). of you have one extra i think you should take great fortitude because WM's high stat is reflex so with great fort you ll kind of get back the fortitude you missed out on.

Straight barbarian is simple but effective.

IMO, the easiest character during the start of the game in the OC was an "evil" cleric I made with the evil and sun domains. That evil power of turning extra-planar creatures is VERY handy.
