Spirit of the Forest

After buying the totem of the tree, I then encountered the Spirit of the Forest in the same area, but nothing happens when I "select" him. Is the Spirit of the Tree supposed to do something?

No, he doesn't do a thing that I have ever noticed. You will need to give the totem to a group of other guardians/trees. Look here for a map and other info:
