I bought the 4 DVD set so I could go back to the beginning - I installed BG and have reached the 89k cap, so I wanted to install the TOSC expansion - from the same set of discs - yet after installation reaches 100% it hangs then, once you get out of the hang and start the game, it says "wrong version - this version can only be used in the United States and Canada!" - and will not let me play BG at all.
the discs all came from PC World in the UK and BG does not say there is a problem when installed on its own.
irritatingly, it wouldn't play on my main PC, despite the huge memory and graphics card - and despite having installed BGII on that machine - it demands some feature that my wife's laptop has through being a later build. I update windows on my main machine, but still it doesn't like it.
all nonsense considering the game is 1998? era and before BGII which plays OK.
any thoughts kind people?
expansion installation - "wrong version"
expansion installation - "wrong version"

Wow, sounds like a real predicament dontchaknow. If I were you old bean I'd pick up a little old copy of the latest release, which I believe is the DVD box containing both BGs and expansions, and have a crack at installing that on either machine. It's mighty cheap and designed to work almost anywhere, or so I've been informed. BG is so old it should work on typewriters, so it is very much on the suprising side that you should be having problems.

it was that DVD set that I was installing (£14.99 for a full set of disks - and going back to BG rather than just BGII) - I tried it on a Casio calculator to start with, but couldn't see where to connect the USB from an external HD.
it IS weird though - the basic game BG doesn't have the problem, despite having come out of the same box. I hate ringing telephone support, as people on here usually seem to know about 100x more than the alleged 'experts' who talk to people like they were their addled grandmother asking how to work the new-fangled flush toilet.
it's pretty likely it is a glitch and the hang prevents the PC from by-passing the region test or something.
just wondered if you masterinds out there knew how to fix it.

I have a similar problem to that at the beginning of this thread and wondered if anyone has sorted it yet. I had TOSC installed and working OK. I then got some corrupted files and wanted to reinstall to correct matters. I was unable to uninstall as I got the message that my files were corrupted. I had problems with Autorun so tried installing via Add/Remove programs in another area. I could install Baldur's Gate fine and it worked, however after installing TOSC, I got the message mentioned in this thread, only works in America and Canada. Has anyone got any ideas? I was wondering if it was anything to do with DirectX or whatever it's called. I would appreciate help very much.
It was my understanding that installing the latest TOTSC UK patch corrected that problem but I may be mistaken.

I initially had a similar problem where I could play BGI just fine, but installation of BGTotSC completely wrecked everything and told me that I could only play this game on an English OS.
What worked for me was to first install BG, then install TotSC, and then run the international patch available from here. Now, at certain points in the game, it asks me to put in CD 6 - which I obviously don't have, seeing that I have the 4-CD-batch, but I've learned that putting in the TotSC CD helps.
There might be further information at the Bioware forums, here. Apparently, a lot of people have problems with 'wrong versions', but downloading and running one of the patches seems to fix the problem.

Thanks. The threads mentioned were exactly the same problems that I have been having, so I will try the solutions. I also discovered that when I said BG1 was working, that was not exactly correct as it was EXCEEDINGLY buggy. I hope that the patches work.Ningengirai wrote:I initially had a similar problem where I could play BGI just fine, but installation of BGTotSC completely wrecked everything and told me that I could only play this game on an English OS.
