Is there any particular place one might a really nice polearm?

Well, as I mentioned in another post, after defeating Voraatus you can choose either demon's sword, either demon's spells. Choose the sword, you'll receive the Angelic Destroyer among others. It does a lot of damage + fire damage + divine intervention.

Heavy poles or light poles? What game version are you using? I know in the Collector's edition you can get a golden war spear (light pole) from one of Mog's cronies in the Forbidden lands. It is pretty nice.

Additionally, you can purchase a fumata-yari (heavy pole) from the house of the tiger in Arindale. It isn't terribly impressive (not like the angelic destroyer POISON mentioned) but it isn't bad either. Hmm, let me think...Some witches will drop a staff of burning, which is also an ok light pole weapon. You can get nether impalers (light) in the Vale of Ruin and naga pikes (heavy) at the Naga temple. If your character is a valkyrie you will get a winged destroyer (heavy pole) from completing the initiation quest.
