hi guys it's been a while since i last read your forum (and played BG2), and that is what i have been doing these days (reading this forum).
i Played BG2 only twice,in italian language. i bought the english version and i will install it soon with some mods.
since i am italian my english is poor and it is even poorer after ten hours in front of the computer...
by reading the forum i discovered: mods, and the ranger/cleric
so here is what i am gonna do: install the game, install some mods and form this team:
I ACCEPT SUGGESTIONS on everything.
1-PC Ranger/Cleric (mighty, i have to try)
2-Nalia, the thieving gipsy
3-Keldorn (Saerileth?)
4-Haer'Dalis (or whoever BLADE god i love them)
Now... let us reason:
Playing with 4 characters allows me to get them at fairly high levels quite quickly so (according to what i have been reading) so nalia will get pretty nasty.
THIEVING: not into backstabbing, Nalia is all I need to pick locks and traps.
(am i right?) Jan is superb, but i played him already i am bored of turnips...
SPELLCASTING: i love it! everyone casts spells. Keldorn saves others from memorizing Dispel and TrueSight.
my PC has cleric and druid spells.
MELEE: Keldorn-carsomyr, Ranger/Cleric--dualwield FoA+CromFayr
two slots are nice for side quests.
NPC mods: i don't like Keldorn face, what can i do? can saerileth become an inquisitor? with shadowkeeper?
can i change NPC portraits somehow? no?
Do i lack melee power? i might get sarevok in TOB huh?
thank all,
Eros "windchime" B.

1. You can change the portraits in Shadow Keeper.
2. Nalia is inadequate at finding/removing traps and lockpicking. Even with the ring of lockpicks. Unless of course you use Shadow Keeper to tweak her, maybe add two levels of thieving and up her lockpicking and F/RT to 100, and removing one level of Mage to balance it. Some might consider this cheating of course.
3. Whilst Imoen (or Imowimp as I call her) is a better thieving option, you can't get her until well into the game of course. Which leaves you with the option of Jan (and I understand your boredom with him, even though he is my favourite NPC), Yoshimo or Nalia and a sack full of potions of Power/thievery etc..
4. I don't know how good HD is in a fight, never used him, but if you want a laugh, you could take Korgan and Mazzy, the interplay between those two is a riot.

I think that a Blade, overall, can serve as THE best tank in the entire game, so you should keep the Tiefling with you.
The ideal equipment is very easy to find.

Yep I've done a Blade halfway through, and though I'm far from being an expert in that class, they make good tanks when properly buffed. I stopped only because that class was time consuming to play effectively. (I simply have enough micromanagement with my mages and want my tanks more point and click. Korgan comes to mind
)
@Galraen: Personally I find Imoen to be alot better than Nalia, their stats are the same (decent for a mage) but Imoen doesn't keep saying "for the needy" every 30 seconds
Also Imoen can open/disarm 99% of the locks/traps in the game Nalia manages maybe 30-50%. Edwin tops them all anyway, better personality, voice set and ofcourse he has roughly twice their spells. Bioware should really have put in a chaotic good Sorceror with a good voice set to match Edwin's raw power

WELL WELL WELL (other suggestions)
THANK YOU GUYS YOU MADE mY DAY...
see i know Korgan and i think i will have him for a while in chapter 1, just for his side quest, other than that, Keldorn (or saerileth, which i never used, suggestion here) will provide enough melee power with the PC (ranger/cleric dual wield) and Haer'dalis or other mod (but a BLADE, suggestion here).
BTW, Haer'Dalis is absolutely fun (in italian at least), i never heard him in english so far, does he saysomething like "yes, my raven?" when you click on him huh?
at high levels (again playingwith 4 slots only) he can handle himself in battle with the offensive spin and defensive spin... i suggest haer'Dalis to everyone. he also becomes a good caster.(not very good though)
As for my main spellcaster, can i use Edwin(suggestion here please, i.e. why Kelsey)? will he stick to the party without mods? i don't really think he will like high reputation is it? that means i have to use a thief, and Jan is my favourite, when you play only with 4 characters he becomes very powerful, but then again i would like to try either (suggestion here) Saerileth or Nalia Romances. i saw in the forums that Nalia romance is quite tricky though... i like saerileth, at least the portrait, and i read a lot about her.
so in this moment i can think also of a party of 5:
-Ranger/Cleric (dual immediately) male:romance with saerileth
-Paladin:Inquisitor Saerileth or Keldorn (never played HER)
-Pure Mage/sorcerer (suggestion here please): Kelsey (never played him)
OR Edwin, (never played him either) with happy family mod maybe?
-Pure thief/any kit (mods?) (suggestion here please)
-Haer'dalis or mod, Blade anyway (suggestionhere please)
PS: another thing that is "lost in translation" is anomen annoying attitude, which he doesn't have at all when speaking in italian, oh yes he believes he's more than he is, but apparently he's less annoying. :speech:

You seem to like Nalia. If that's the case, I'm happy you feel that way. Don't let anyone else discourage you from taking her with you. I have a lot of affection for Imoen, but I have to admit that her dialogue is disappointing. However, I do think it's a little funny that you call Nalia a "gipsy". I smiled when I read that. If that's the way you picture her, then you should let your imagination run wild with that idea. It makes the game more fun.
I recommend the Saerileth mod. Just remember that she is the servant of a god, and she will not tolerate moral cowardice or acts of evil. If you romance her, she will be very nice to you. If you break her heart, she will leave the group forever.
You can make Saerileth an Inquisitor with Shadowkeeper. I have done that before. While you're at it, you can also make Nalia a 7th level Thief or 9th level Thief dualled to a Mage. That way, you won't have any problems with traps and locks. The best way to change a character's class is to make her a 0 level character. Set her level to 0, set experience to 0, set hit points to 1 or 2, change the class, remove all abilites and "affects", and in the case of a Thief or Ranger, set all thieving skills to 0. When you start the game, the character will become a 1st level character and she will automatically gain all of the appropriate abilities, and her THAC0 and saving throws will be automatically adjusted. That saves you the trouble of changing EVERYTHING manually. After you save the game, go back to Shadowkeeper and set the experience to whatever it was before. You should also subtract the 1 or 2 hit points she started with so that she will have a legitimate number of hit points.
If you're changing Nalia to a 9th level Thief dualled to a Mage, there are a few extra steps. When you make her a 0 level character, change her class to single class Thief (NOT Mage/Thief). After you start the game and make her a 1st level Thief, you need to go back to Shadowkeeper and give her enough experience to reach 9th level (110,000 points). Then you need to go back to the game and and have her level up to 9th level (I would put at least 90 points in Open Locks and Find Traps), and then dual-class her. Then you can go back to Shadowkeeper and give her the same amount of experience she had before, minus the 110,000 experience points it took to make her 9th level. If that's confusing, feel free to ask more questions, and I will try to help.
As long as you have a Thief who has enough skill points to open all locks and find all traps, you don't have much need for a single-class Thief. Your Cleric/Ranger can use stealth and do all of your scouting (with less chance of being killed than a weak little Thief). Don't forget that a Ranger can cast Find Traps. If you want to do a lot of backstabbing, you might be disappointed in a single-class Thief. Fighter/Thieves are the only characters who are really any good at it, in my opinion. If you want to use traps, you don't necessarily need a Thief, since a Mage can cast spells that act like "traps". Web and Skull Trap come to mind, along with the Priest spell Glyph of Warding. Tactics involving a Wand of Cloudkill might also be considered "traps".
I think you would enjoy the following party:
Cleric/Ranger (male, main character)
Saerileth (Inquisitor, romance)
Nalia (9th level Thief dualled to a Mage)
Haer'Dalis (customized Blade--he's a Doomguard and the designers changed him a little)
I don't know if you would enjoy having Edwin in your party. You might need the Happy Patch if you have him in your party. If you have Saerileth in your party, you might have trouble adding Edwin to your party. Before Edwin will join your party, you have to perform some tasks for him, and Saerileth will not let you do it. The easiest way around that is to start Renal Bloodscalp's quest and do Edwin's tasks before you meet Saerileth. After Edwin is in your group, you can go meet Saerileth and finish Renal's quest. She is 10th level when you meet her, so it's not so bad if she misses some experience.
You can add Kelsey to your party. I feel like the mod tries to turn him into the most important character in the game (when the game is supposed to focus on my own character), but aside from that minor complaint, the quality is very good and it adds a lot of extra dialogue to the game. Or, here is a radical alternative. Make your main character a Sorcerer and turn one of the NPCs into a Cleric/Ranger. Jaheira comes to mind. One of the advantages in having her in the party (besides the romance) is that her involvement with the Harpers creates a long, interesting subquest (even if you don't romance her). That would make your party look like this:
1) Sorcerer (main character)
Cleric/Ranger (Jaheira)
Saerileth (Inquisitor, romance)
Nalia (9th level Thief dualled to a Mage)
Haer'Dalis (customized Blade--he's a Doomguard and the designers changed him a little)

for the following reasons:
-I want to try some NPC mods, namely Kelsey and Saerileth(heard so much about them), i don't mind being lawful good for the whole game... and then i want to try the ranger/cleric class(heard so much about it).
-Having Nalia (the upper-crust gipsy, plus she just so happens to have a castle)as my thief means i don't have to pickup JAN (which i love anyway, but i have enough of turnips)
I like Nalia, i also saw a different portrait which is very nice but she looks less a gipsy.
-I like Haer'Dalis, and i never heard him in english! he becomes very powerful and in a team he actually is very good and gives you a lot of strategy options.
BUT...some questions are triggered... well no, one question:
a) Nalia Romance mod: will i get both the cabin in the hills AND the castle even if i don't romance nalia and romance saerileth? or will the two romances clash together? or am i better off romancing Kelsey instead(this way making my ranger/cleric a female)? was there a mod to get all the strongholds is it?
I WANT THE CASTLE ! I deserve it!
b)saerileth. (she is pretty now is she?) she is a Paladin of Tyr...is that a prestige class, a kit or just a plain Paladin? I think the Inquisitor REALLY rocks, not having it might mean though that i have to invent a new strategy...
Thanks everyone, it's good to have a Forum like this!

Hmm, I thought HD was a bard and not a blade, so I checked and sure enough he's a bard, so windchime is obviously not averse to cheating.
In which case I'd suggest following Vondu's advice on redistributing Nalia's XP to make her a better thief/mage. You might as well make her a specialist mage while you're at it which would make her even more powerful than Edwin the Nauseous*.
As for Imoen being a better thief than Nalia Jedi_Sauraus, I've already agreed with that, but what do you do for the first 3 chapters when she isn't available. Also of course when you do get her she's a heck of a lot weaker than the rest of the party.
*I'm assuming that the others are right about Edwin being the most powerful mage, never used the arrogant, condescending b'stard, even with evil groups. Sorcerers are much better than straight mages IMO anyway, so if my main character isn't a sorcerer then I usually use one of the Sorcerer mods, either Kelsey (can't stand his voice though) or the female one who starts in Trademeet, can't remember her name.

Haer'dalis... is a Blade and yes i don't mind some ShadowKeeping
well...ehm... i think i'll take VonDondu advice on chees'up a little my old friend Nalia (i already cleared Her keep twice, so she is my old friend), maybe i can chees'up her enough for her to handle the trolls herself... (no way)
Anyway, HD is a Blade, he has offensive spin and defensive spin and ++ on two weapons fighting style... check also NPC full stats:

saerileth and TOB
i was thinking...ok i go for saerileth anyway.
AND i don't think i will play TOB (it is installed though). That makes the Inquisitor less appealing is it? I mean i played Keldorn before and he rocks, but Dispel and True Sight are more useful (if not necessary) for TOB right?
so the party looks this way now:
Ranger/Cleric
Saerileth (romance)
Kelsey (romance?)
Haer'Dalis
Nalia (improved)
i still ALSO have these questions though:

I enjoy writing messages here, and I'm glad you enjoyed reading my message.
I don't know anything about the Nalia romance mod. The Saerileth mod is not compatible with the original romances (Aerie, Jaheira, and Viconia). In other words, if you romance Saerileth, the other romances will stop. I don't know if other mods such as Nalia are affected.
Normally, you can't have more than one stronghold. However, the Ease-of-use mod and the BG2 Tweak Pack from Gibberlings Three contain a component that will let you have as many strongholds as you want. I don't know if it works with the Nalia romance mod.
Saerileth is a Cavalier, which falls under the broad category of "Paladin". Even if you make her an Inquisitor, she will refuse to carry any throwing weapons such as Azuredge (since Cavaliers cannot use missile weapons). I don't know why you don't want to play Throne of Bhaal, but there's nothing wrong with your party.
As for Haer'Dalis, he is a Blade in my game. However, he is actually a custom-made character, so he is not like other Blades. He has an extra proficiency point in short swords, some extra points in lore, and a big penalty in pickpocketing.

Curiouser and curiouser, HD is definitely a bard in my game. I wonder when it was changed.

Thanks VonDondu (and others)
i don't mind romancing Nalia, so i am happy with any MOd that lets me have the castle.
say i don't anyway... Nalia can still access her castle after clearing it out... or not? i think it gets sealed is it?
I am just thinking i don't WANT to play ToB, just because i think SoA is complete the way it is and ToB gets boring because you kinda have to use always the same strategy, i mean not always, but you know there is a lot of powerful spellcasters and you always need to dispel illusion, break through thei magic defences and then hack them down, ok you may habve many fights but there is less story, less interaction, you just have to make your space amongst the other offspring of Bhaal...
my party wopuld be good enough at high levels, with both Haer'Dalis and Nalia, capable of UAI and spike traps, enhanced bardsong and so on...
sure i'll give it a go...
so the thing i don't know now is if keeping Nalia with my party will grant me access to the castle or not... just for storage you know...and well, i can always use the pocket plane...
VonDondu, a big word of thanks for you, not just for the replies to mythread, but also for the presence in this forum, i think your posts are quite enlightened and i can see the come from an experienced player...
long live Baldur's Gate 2 !!!

Dalis' class is indeed a Bard. However, as a bard you can specialize into a Skald, Blade or Jester. Dalis' specialized into the Bardic kit 'Blade'. Look at his profile or kit description, I'm sure you can find the information there as well.galraen wrote:Curiouser and curiouser, HD is definitely a bard in my game. I wonder when it was changed.
@windchime, re: Nalia Romance. I don't think the Nalia Romance is nearly as good as Kelsey or even Saerileth. Furthermore, and in my opinion even more importantly: It's not a Weidu Mod and not as bug free as Kelsey or your favourite young paladin.
So if you want to have the Keep as your stronghold, your best bet would be the Ease of Use mod hosted at Wesley Weimer's site or BG2 Tweak Pack from Gibberlings Three as Von suggested.
"Sometimes Dreams are wiser than waking"
SK allows you to add and/or remove items and their quantities, but it does not allow you to edit them.windchime wrote:you know that symbol of hers? the helm she wears... can it be tweaked a little, maybe with shadowkeeper...
PS am i the only one to think that saerileth is a Liv Tyler lookalike?
You would need several special programs, like IEEP, IEES and Near Infinity to accomplish that. Unless you're already familiar with such programs, I would not advice you to give it a shot; you might mess up more than you'd try to fix.
"Sometimes Dreams are wiser than waking"
You could give Saerileth the UAI (Use Any Item) ability after changing her class to Inquisitor. I believe that solves the problem too.windchime wrote:yeah you are right no messing i will win the game anyway...
even without an Inquisitor. will miss him though...
"Sometimes Dreams are wiser than waking"
inquisitor or not inquisitor
i just started a new thread on that...
i think changing her to inquisitor is cheap, considering she is the chosen of Tyr.
and i want to try her the way she is, and also not having keldorn or an inquisito will force my brains into inventing a new strategy....
and she is so nice (young and full of ideals, she is definitely a Cavalier)
does that makes sense now?
you know by case if the +3 demon bonus apllies when hitting Bhaalspawns?
i'll send her with unsheathed sword to demogorgon anyway...
