part attacked when returning to city

I am in Chapter 2, obtained a few quests at the Copper Coronet and left the city. I went to Windspear Hills to return the Acorns and got tangled up in the quest to rescue the Rangers daughter. However, I returned to the city before completing the quest. I wanted to buy something at the adventurer's mart. However, when I entered the city I was immediately attacked by a powerful mage and a group of guards. Needless to say, they made pretty quick work of my low level party. My questions:
1. Why was I attacked??
2. How can I avaid this in the future??
3. What will repair the situation so that I am not attacked??

When you went to Windspear Hills you killed some men...Hint Hint.. Solve the quest there before going back to the City.

Thanks for the Hint Hint. I realize that the men I killed were the Paladins. So I started on the quest. Will rescuing the ranger's daughter complete the quest or will I need to kill the dragon also??
