Potion Limit Glitch?

Post by werebeargoddess »

So... currently I'm clearing out the Oblivion Gate for the Leyawiin section of the Defence For Bruma (think that's what it is called anyway) segment of the Main Quest. Unsurprisingly, I always get up to my char's weight limit pretty quickly in the Oblivion Gates, requiring both feather spells and potions. But for some reason, it never lets me drink five potions, which, IIRC, is the potion limit - only four. It's not the first time that this has happened - but since it doesn't happen often, I havem't paid much attention to it.

Is this some kind of glitch, or what? Is there some patch or something that fixes it? I've already done a search on it on this website, but I didn't come up with anything.
I wanted to change my sig, but I can't think of anything to change it to :(

No, it is not. Potion buffs stack, so there is sound reasoning behind this. To illustrate, there is this Morrowind video online somewhere where someone takes just a few dozens of minutes to beat the entire game. He buys enough ingredients/potions to buff himself way out into godhood. He then just flies straight up to the endgame and beats it in a manner of seconds.

Limiting the amount of potion stacks has removed a potentially game breaking element and replaced it with a tactical one

Maybe... I don't know. There are times in the game where I am able to drink five potions at once, and so have a higher feather buff. And that's with any spells I cast, and with my enchanted equipment. It's just this once( and maybe one or two other times) that I can't drink five potions at once, only four.

Also - if I have, say, four feather potions going, it won't let me dring even a restore potion, even though I don't already have one going.

I honestly never noticed if it was four or five.

Normally I don't either, but I'm pretty sure the limit's at five; I know that some others have mentioned it being at that.

I don't know; it just gets really annoying, especially in the middle of a battle in the world I'm in right now for the main quest; I'll have four feather potions going, and instead of being able to drink a health potion, the game won't let me.

I believe it's in the manual. It's not limited to potions, either. Simply put, you can't have more than 5 active spell effects running simultaneously. So that means potions, spells, enchantments, etc.

Manual that came with the game, or the walkthrough? If there was a manual that came with the game, well, I've probably lost it.

I've never noticed the spell limit, probably because I don't use them as much.

Manual. I also discovered it fairly early on, because I like spell buffs--not to mention that they also help develop your spellcasting.

No Glitch simply an add on to remove cheating from oblivion as you might all remember the...fortify intelligence? Morrowind Alchemy would've been much better with a 5 pot limit. Also there is no limit to spells, or enchanments.
So i hear that the dark brotherhood assinated an elf.

Yes, I know why they put the limit. ;) What I had been saying was that my game sometimes won't let me get up to the limit of 5 potions, but would only let me drink 4 potions, and if that part had been a glitch.

I've tried casting a feather spell to further lighten the load my PC was carrying, only to have a message pop up that I already had the limit of 5 effects running simultaneously.

Could you have had another magical effect running at the same time? Perhaps an enchanted item active? Or even a light spell?

I haven't tried a light spell, but usually I'll have a couple of enchantments, plus three or so spells running at the same time.

Count up all the magical effects you have going at a single time, and see if they add up to more than 5. I could be wrong on this, but if memory serves me, that's your limit for everything. So if you could only get 4 potion-based effects at the same time, it would be because you had one other magical effect already in place.

Sorry it took me forever to get back to this...

@Fable: I usually have at least 7 enchanted items on, occasionally more. By the time I start using feather potions, I tend to have 3 spells going as well, so that's about 10 different things (at least) befroe I even get to my feather potions. If there's a 5 limit, it's probably just for potions and spells, and a seperate one at that.

About drinking potions

I can’t say I’d know much about the potion drinking limit, I’ve faced it few times and used some plug-ins that make potion drinking relevant to your alchemy skill. But I think it might be possible for you to buff yourself into godhood in Oblivion. This time around, it might take more time.

You should never drink potions until you face the potion limit, well that is, unless you have panicked and seen it as a necessarily to drink as many health potions as humanly possible. Yet, with little patience you can get more out of your potions, presuming you have the required potions to maintain your state.

So the first step, drink three potions of same type, nothing more and keep playing your game. After playing a while, you should notice how there isn’t much left of the duration of your potions. Now drink another potion, and the duration of the effect will jump up. But there is more in it; you now have the buff of the previous potions + the recently drank. In theory, you could buff yourself into godhood, feather of 20 000 and similar strength, intelligence or endurance.

But I am faced some trouble with my feather enchanted gear, my actual feather enchantment being smaller than what it should be. Well I am suspecting a bug of one sort, or limitations in the game to keep it “fair”. But I guess it would be worth to try out if there are similar limitations in the potion drinking.
